Toni Morrison was an American writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels, Beloved, Song of Solomon and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed with skin color. Morrison was nearly 40 when she published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as “language itself, a language she wants to liberate from race”. Her novels discussed America's past, focusing on black history and the effects of slavery and racism. She called her characters “the unfree at the heart of the democratic(民主的)experiment”.
In 1988, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to return to slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film. Many Americans admired her as the country's greatest writer, including former President Barack Obama.
She was born in 1931. She attended Howard University, an all-black university in Washington, D. C. At Howard, she read African, British and American literature, including writers William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. After a short marriage, she became a single mother of two sons and worked as a book editor in New York.
Several publishers rejected her first book The Bluest Eye, but it impressed The New York Times' book critic John Leonard, who believed Morrison was an important new voice. He said her writing was "so full of pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry”.
Morrison enjoyed her literary fame and was proud of her Nobel Prize.

Do you ever listen to the songs that your parents like Chances are that you don't. You probably think the music that they like is old and boring and that the songs on your playlist are much cooler. But scientists found that people's music taste changes as time goes by. So it is likely that your own musical preferences will follow a similar path to your parents’, whether you like it or not.
We used to think that culture and personality are the only reasons for different music choices. But researchers at the University of Cambridge noticed that as people enter into different age groups, their social environment changes, and so does their music taste. There are some musical periods that people go through in their life. The first period comes in the teenage years, during which people like strong music such as punk and rock, because teenagers tend to be aggressive (具有攻击性的)or want to be independent.
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyles change and they want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they become fonder of contemporary music, such as pop and R&B, which is usually uplifting and danceable.
When middle age comes, most people have settled down. During this period, people prefer music such as jazz and classical, as well as music like country, folk and blues.
As for old people, they prefer old songs in their childhoods. They generally listen to relaxing music, such as country music and jazz music. But you must be questioning, "Aren’t there old people who are still interested in or even crazy about rock music " Of course there are. But their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. At that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youth.
( )4. What do young people usually think of the songs their parents enjoy
A. They are actually less cool
B. They are worth listening to.
C. They are especially serious.
D. They are hard to understand.
( )5. How many musical periods are there that people go through in their life

C. Four.
D. Five.

C. rock music
D. pop music
( )7. What is the best title for the text
A. People Have Different Opinions on Music
B. People Listen to Music for the Same Reason
C. People’s Taste in Music Changes with Time
D. People’s Lifestyle Can Be Changed by Music
C篇
I’d always dreamed of exploring Africa, ever since I read my first Tarzan(《人猿泰山》)comic as a child. Finally, in 2004, to celebrate my 60th birthday, I went to Tanzania to experience a safari(游猎)and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Seated next to me on the flight was Tanzania's minister of water and wildlife development. We talked for thousands of miles, and he arranged for me to visit a school. When I toured the school, I was shocked. The leaky(漏的)roofs turned the dirt floors into mud during the rainy season, and the walls couldn't keep out the heat, cold or bugs (小昆虫).The school was in need of all material goods, but the kids possessed great human spirit.
It broke my heart that these children had to struggle to survive, so I asked the headmaster what it would cost to feed them. As little as 20 cents per child per day, he told me. Immediately I got home, I founded Kids of Kilimanjaro. Since then we've grown to provide hot lunches for nearly 13,000 schoolchildren every day. The free lunch program has eased a major problem the youngsters face.
I know a good education could really make a difference in these children's lives. My parents always stressed the importance of education. I paid my own way through college in Tokyo by teaching English to students and business people. After attending university I moved to San Francisco, when I was 25 years old. In 1978 I realized my American dream when I founded my own company. My success all started with a good education,
It’s amazing that something as simple as a nutritious lunch can change and enrich so many lives. Giving young people a better, healthier life can inspire them to go all the way through college and lead a movement that transforms their country.
( )8. Why did the author go to Tanzania to celebrate his 60th birthday
A. He was curious about what Africa was like.
B. He was concerned about the Africans’ terrible life.

( )9. After his tour to the school, the author found that the kids there were______.
A. in need of help
B. not interested in studies
C. not used to the rainy season
D.in low spirits
( )10.What is the main purpose of Kids of Kilimanjaro
A. To make sure the African kids are mentally healthy.
B. To spread knowledge among the African kids.
C. To build new schools for the African kids.
D. To protect the African kids from hunger.
( )11. The author believes education is important because_______.
A. his parents always stressed the importance of education
B. a good education contributes to his success
C. he paid his own way through college by teaching English
D. he's trying to realize his American dream
D篇
We spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing all of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours To understand the issue, let’s take a look at three types of “waits”.
The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most annoying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it’s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This makes the waiter helpless and mindless.
A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup requires a Foreed Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer (炖) for three minutes, remove from heat, let stand for five minutes." I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all, Forced Waiting requires patience.
Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary, Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.
Turning one's life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optimists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous(荒谬的)as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn't come to rely on it, wishing for a few good things never hurts anybody.
We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you’re standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you'll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don't be desperate. You're probably just as busy as the next guy.
( )12. While doing a Watched-Pot Wait, we tend to_______.
A. keep ourselves busy
B. get absent-minded
C. grow anxious
D. stay focused
( )13. What is the difference between the Forced Wait and the Watched-Pot Wait
A. The Forced Wait requires some self-control.
B. The Forced Wait makes people passive.
C. The Watched-Pot Wait needs directions.
D. The Watched-Pot Wait engages body and brain.
( )14. What does the author advise us to do the next time we are waiting
A. Take it seriously.
B. Don’t rely on others.
C. Do something else.
D. Don’t lose heart.
( )15. The author supports his view by______.
A. exploring various causes of “waits”
B. describing detailed processes of waits"
C. analyzing different categories of“waits"
D. revealing frustrating consequences of “waits”

When Farrel was young, he had a Rat Terrier(捕鼠犬).He named it RK, short for Rat Killer. The following is how he came across the dog and adopted it.
That was sometime in the 1930s. He worked in the booth with the projectionist(电影放映员) He liked to see the theater from the booth. At that time, people usually took a short break between reel(胶卷) changes. Farrel would take this chance to look at the theater audience. The people were usually talking or making a trip to the bathroom during the breaks. The lights were on, but turned down low. Farrel saw something that shocked him at this time. He actually saw 3 huge rats. They crossed the room and went under the seats. Then the movie was over, and he had to stay behind and clean up. That night he stayed in the projection room and watched from above. He saw several rats running around below. They were so huge that he could see them clearly from above. But when the lights were turned up brighter, the rats all disappeared.
He told the manager what he saw. The manager said that he knew about the rats. But he couldn't use poisons in the theater to get rid of them. So, Farrel suggested introducing some cats to the theater at night. The manager agreed to it and asked Farrel to find the cats. And he also asked Farrel to remove the cats in the morning and any dead rats that might be around.
Farrel found 4 large cats and took them to the theater. The cats were first kept in cages. Farrel
thought they were ready for their duties as night “watchmen”. When the movie was over, Farrel opened the cage and released the new “night guards”. The next morning, Farrel opened the front door of the theater, and to his surprise, all 4 cats shot out of the door and down to the street.
