For many tests and exams, you are tested on your abilities to communicate successfully. To speak English fluently, you need to think in English. If you don’t, your speech will be slow and it won’t sound natural. Here are some things you can do to practice thinking in English.
Look at objects around your home and school, and think of what they are called in English. Try to make a direct connection between the object and the English word.
When you are out in a public place, practice describing the things and people you see in your mind. For example, when you see somebody, you may think, “There is a man walking down the street. He’s wearing a suit. I think he is going to work.” Try to think in English first, not in your first language.
When you have to say something in English, think first and ask yourself, “What words and phrases do I know in English that I can use in this situation ” Try not to think in your first language and translate your ideas into English.

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.
When I was a little girl, I never dared ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk round in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I always say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

My grandfather is eighty years old. He always complains about how fast things have changed, and he often says that life used to be better.
Families aren’t what they used to be. A lot of families have broken up. If the husband and wife have problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children, but now everyone is busy working. No one has time to look after children at home.
And the cars! No one walks anymore; more and more people drive. We used to walk five miles to school on schooldays, even in winter. But now students don’t. And in school, children don’t have to think anymore. In maths class, for example, we used to add, subtract, multiply and divide (加减乘除) by using our heads. But now kids don’t use their heads anymore; instead, they use calculators (计算器).
Most families have computers and there are lights at home now. In the past we didn’t have computers. We didn’t even have lights. My mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now we don’t often eat home-cooked food.

Egg carving is often called the most fragile art, as it requires great care before, during and even after the carving. Yu Wen, the granddaughter of a famous local painter in Dandong, Liaoning Province, has been practising egg carving for about 25 years.
Yu has used more than 10, 000 eggs, and years of hard work has left many thick calluses on her hands. Sometimes she can’t even hold chopsticks properly after a long day of holding the carving knife. But in Yu’s opinion, the difficult process makes egg carving twice as exciting. “If you carve off too much, the work will be broken and there is no way to deal with it. That makes the sense of achievement even greater when you finish a piece.” Yu said.
Yu’s love for egg carving started with a local tradition. In northeast China, when a baby is born, friends and relatives often send eggs colored red as gifts, and some may carve auspicious words on them. The character “福” is a popular one to be carved onto eggs. Yu carves with not only popular characters or traditional patterns , but also Peking Opera masks and wall paintings. Her egg carving is just as much about eggs as it is about Chinese culture.
Now Yu teaches egg carving at a local university. In recent years, she has seen more people coming from across the country to learn the art. “I hope I can better combine(结合)the art with traditional culture in the future.” Yu said.

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.

Teens want structure in their lives, which means they want their lives well-planned. To begin building structure, teens need love and trust. They need to know their parents are there to give them needed love and support (支持). Teens want to be sure that nothing can prevent parents from shouldering their responsibility for them — not their growing maturity (成熟), misbehavior, nor anger at something they have done. Teens want parents to keep control while allowing them to make some decisions.
There are some ways you can help your teens create reasonable structure and remain close. One way is to spend time together. Parents often mistake their teens’ increased interest in friends for a disinterest in the family.
Teens would like to spend more time doing things with their parents, but watching TV is not counted as spending time together. As your teens mature, it is important for you and your teens spend time alone together, one to one. Your teens need time to talk to you alone without any other family member present. Talk with your teens about their interests and concerns. Make sure you really show interest in what is happening. When talking with your teens, give full attention and do not stop them.
The way to help your teens become adults is to let your teens into your world. Sharing your emotions and concerns with your teens is important. Avoid causing needless worry. Trust your teens. Don’t expect the worst. Hope for the best. Telling your teens you don’t like their friends will cause the teens not to bring their friends home. If something should go wrong, believe that your teens didn’t do it on purpose.
It is very important that you treat your teens with respect. Teens need the same respect adults show for total strangers. Don’t talk down to your teens.
You need to be supportive of your teens. What may be a small problem to you may be troubling to your teens. Teens don’t have the experiences that adults have had. Let the teens know that you understand how much it hurts when something happens that is upsetting or hurtful to them. As they mature, they can look back at some problems they had and laugh at having been upset by something that now seems unimportant.
The most important things to remember are: talk with your teens, listen to their worries and offer suggestions when needed. This will help your teens to live a well-organized life.
31.According to Paragraph 1, teens ______.
A.can control themselves B.expect direction and freedom
