On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, "You're nervous and that's okay. Everyone is afraid of high school." I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.
On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn't figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be I didn't think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it!
Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging. Since then, I've been elected (选举) vice monitor of my class, which wasn't much of a victory since only three people ran for the four positions.
It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something that any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some out-of-class activities because you'll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn't straight A's.
Most important of all, be who you are, whether you're a fool, an athlete, or a lower grader. Don't try to pretend to be someone you're not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.
24. The main reason for the author's fear on his first day is that________.
A. he was not familiar with the new surroundings
B. his schoolmates were unfriendly to him
C. he was unable to work out the puzzle
D. his schoolbag was too heavy for him to carry
25. From the author's first day experience we can infer that________.
A. he didn't know the right way to class
B. he got to school before classes began
C. he was fond of the school immediately.
D. his home was far from the school
26. After his first week at school, the author________.
A. was still not accustomed to the schedule
B. was gradually used to the new school
C. found high school not so challenging as he had imagined.
D. ran for monitor of his class against three other students.

Why do people travel Well, we usually travel because we want to see other countries and visit places that are famous, interesting or beautiful. We travel to meet new friends, to try new kinds of food, to experience life in other parts of the world or simply to get away from cold weather. However, there are other reasons for adventure travel. Many of today's adventure travelers are looking for an unusual experience and adventure travel is becoming more and more popular. Here is a quick look at two popular activities: hiking and rafting.
Instead of spending your vacation on a bus, in a hotel or sitting on the beach, you may want to try hiking. Hiking is a great way to travel. You will get close to nature and take exercise at the same time. Hiking is easy to do and doesn't have to be very expensive. You can hike close to home or other places. Another exciting adventure is rafting. A raft is a small boat that you can use to paddle(划桨)down rivers and streams. Rafting is a good way to experience nature. If you want a normal rafting trip, choose a quiet stream or river that is wide and has few fallen trees or rocks. As with hiking, you should always think about your safety and wear good clothes. You also need to learn the basic skills, such as how to handle the raft, how to paddle and how to get in and out of the raft. You should not raft unless you know how to swim, and you should always wear a life jacket.

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate
Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. 31 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.
◇Talk things munication is key. If some thing happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 32
◇Don't expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 33 And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.
◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 34
◇Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy. 35 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.
A. So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.
B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.
C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D. You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.
E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F. Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.
G. Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.
