Do Dolphins (海豚) Have a Language
We know that dolphins make unique sounds, but is that a language If you're interested in it, you are welcome to the activity recommended by Denise Herzing!
About Denise Herzing
Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is the organiser and research director of the Wild Dolphin Project, which has a goal of understanding dolphins' social system (体系), behaviour, and communication. For over thirty years, she has spent each summer watching Atlantic dolphins carefully in the Bahamas.
Activity Guide:
Purpose:
Dolphins use sound to communicate, but they can't make sounds in the way we humans make. Out of the water dolphins can make different sounds by changing the shape of their blowhole (呼吸孔), which is similar to changing the shape of our own mouths. Underwater, though, they use a totally different system, and they make sounds without letting any air out. You can learn more about how that works here. In this activity we're going to try to talk like a dolphin.
Materials:
Nothing! But find a partner, maybe a brother or sister or a parent — or if you have one, a dog or cat.
After all, this activity is about communication between humans and animals. How To Do It:
Take a deep breath, hold your nose to keep it shut, and try to communicate with your partner. If your partner is a pet, try saying its name or asking it to "come here".
When you're done, think about what made it hard, what solutions you found, and think why dolphins may have developed to communicate in this way.
Then listen to sounds from all kinds of sea animals and compare your dolphin sound to theirs.
What can we learn about Denise Herzing
She holds the activity in FAU.
She is an expert in dolphins.
She wants to find a partner for her research.
She fell in love with dolphins when young.
What would you have to do for the activity
Have a pet next to you.
Keep breathing deeply.
Talk with your nose closed.
Compare dolphins with other animals.
Where can the text be found
A. In a diary. B. In a report. C. In a travel brochure. D. In an activity book.

I work as a waiter in a café and love the job most of the time. I spend the morning hours with all the coffee and see the friendly customers (顾客) every day. But there're always those mornings when a few unwanted customers come in. Maybe they are late for work, or simply wake up on the wrong side of the bed. They often make a short loud request (要求) for coffee without looking at me directly. It is hard to stand. And some customers are just discourteous and they believe that customers are always right, even if they act like fools. Things like good manners (礼貌) are often unseen in such situations.
Just like me, Austin Simms of Cups Coffee and Tea has had enough of this. Taking matters into his own hand, to help some customers with their manners, he placed a sign outside showing their new pricing method.
His new sign shows the cost of a coffee as $5. If a customer walks up to the server and simply says, "Small coffee," he/she will need to pay $5 for that small coffee. The price of a "small coffee, please" goes down to $3. In other words, a nice "please" with a request for a small coffee will drop the price by $2. The coffee only costs $1.75 if the customer says, "Hello. One small coffee, please." So you can see that customers that show the most manners get the largest discounts (折扣).
The new strategy (策略) certainly has got some people to rethink their manners given that the news has spread across the world. We can be sure that at least some customers have changed their behavior, and that's a good thing, even if they do it to get discounted coffee. The more you do something, the more you get used to it. So, this little strategy that the business owner used could actually end up causing many people to be more polite all the time.
What does the underlined word "discourteous" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Impolite. B. Proud. C. Confused. D. Busy.
Which of the following decides the price of coffee according to Austin's method
The size of the coffee customers request.
The way customers talk to servers.
Customers' understanding of servers' work.
Customers' relationship with servers.
Which word could best describe Austin Simms
A. Helpful. B. Creative. C. Humorous. D. Responsible.
What is the author's purpose in writing the last paragraph
To show he supports Austin's method.
To explain the influence of discounts.
To show the importance of politeness.
To introduce the future of the café business.

Cows are a large source (来源) of greenhouse gases. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be cut down by adding a little seaweed (海藻) to their food.
Cows have four stomachs, one of which helps break down the grass into something that the cow's body can use. But when this happens, much methane ( 甲 烷 ), which is the world's second worst greenhouse gas, will be produced. The methane comes out of a cow's body mainly as burps (打嗝).
Recently, the researchers from the University of California, Davis studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood ( 罩 子 ), which allowed the scientists to know how much methane the cows were giving off. They used some seaweed, which they mixed with the cows' food.
The results were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given, but even the worst-polluting cows produced 33% less methane.
Over the five months, the scientists didn't see any signs that the cows produced more methane again. What's more, the cows that were fed seaweed put on just as much weight as the other cows, but they didn't need as much food.
But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there's not enough seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to find a way to grow lots of seaweed. A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there's no chance to feed them seaweed every day.
Still, it's very good news that something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help cut down on some of the pollution causing the increasing temperature (温度).
Why did the researchers carry out the study
A. To improve cows' diets. B. To change cows' way of eating.
C. To prove that seaweed has more uses. D. To cut down on greenhouse gases from cows.
What happened to the cows fed with seaweed
A. Their weight wasn't influenced. B. Their eating habits have changed.
C. They couldn't get used to the change at first. D. They increasingly depended on seaweed.
What is the biggest challenge in the researchers' opinion
A. Cows have been used to eating grass. B. Seaweed can't be easily mixed with grass.
C. Seaweed can't be easily provided for cows. D. Farmers cannot afford to grow seaweed.
What is the author's attitude toward the findings
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Worried. D. Confused.
D
A little creativity each day can go a long way towards happiness and pleasure in our daily life.
The researchers followed 658 people for about two weeks and found that doing small, everyday things like cooking and baking (烘焙) made the group feel more relaxed and happier. By following diaries kept by the study subjects, the researchers found that besides feeling happier, people who worked on little creative projects every day also felt they were "flourishing", a term that describes the feeling of personal growth. That could mean that the good feeling that comes with pulling the freshly-baked bread out of the oven could carry over into the next day, making that baker more likely to keep on with their little acts of creative cooking.
This isn't the first time researchers have connected making food with good feelings. In recent years, cooking and baking have been explored as a tool to help people deal with things like nervousness and worry.
"When I'm in the kitchen, preparing things like sugar or butter I needed or breaking the exact number of eggs, I am in control," said baker John Whaite with mental disorder ( 心 理 障 碍 ). "That's really important as a key sign of my condition is a feeling of no control."
"For people like Whaite, baking can help them by providing small tasks to focus on. To put together a good meal, cooks have to be continuously in the moment, adding seasonings (调味品) and tasting their food to make sure everything will come out alright, all of which can be helpful methods of treating some forms of mental illness," wrote Huma Qureshi.
A lot of us turn to baking when we're feeling low. Some of us even start baking because they are ill and need something simple to focus. Baking may not be a be-all-and-end-all cure (最佳疗法) for mental illness, but anyone in need of lifted spirits should consider it.
What were the people required to do in the study
A. To find ways to enjoy themselves. B. To practise cooking and baking skills.
C. To invent new methods of baking bread. D. To keep a record of their feelings every day.
What can we infer about Whaite from his words
He has made great progress in baking by practising.
He used to feel nervous and worried when cooking.
He enjoys the feeling of being in control.
He takes pride in his cooking skills.
How could baking help people like Whaite according to Huma Qureshi
By concentrating their mind.
By giving them a sense of success.
By making them taste healthy food.
By making them forget painful things.

Dear Li Hua,
Is everything going well I'm glad that you are aware of the importance of English. I'm
writing to introduce my methods of learning English to you.
To begin with, vocabulary is the base of English. If you only recognise few words, you may
find English texts confusing. So memorising words and expressions as many as possible is the
entrance of learning English well. Additionally, there're many creative methods such as watching
English movies and listening to English songs.
I hope my methods will be of benefit to you.
Yours,
John

One day, Jack was walking home from school. He liked to think about important things
while he was walking, and he often looked down at the sidewalk while he thought. He never
noticed most things like bugs and small pieces of trash. But this day, a shiny coin caught his
eyes. He stopped and picked it up. It was a nice dollar coin. With that, he could buy package of
candy. But he decided to put the coin on the ground again. What if a homeless person might need
that money more than he did He could buy a cup of hot coffee or a loaf of bread with it. But then,
Jack quickly picked up the coin again. What if one of the wealthy guys found it But just as
quickly, Jack put the coin onto the ground and walked away, because he had seen the poorest boy
in his class heading in the same direction, with his eyes also on the ground.
