二、阅读理解。(共20小题,每小题2.5分,计50分)
A
As any parent knows, sometimes a little white lie (善意的说言) is the only way to make a naughty child quiet. Indeed, parents have shared the top white lies they have told their children. While some of them are funny, others are somewhat cruel.
“Father Christmas is watching you” and “Your pet has gone to live on a farm” are among the top white lies. The top 20 list of little lies that adults use shows that four in five parents have told their children something that isn’t true. The threat (威胁) of Father Christmas is on the top, with 62 percent of parents using Father Christmas to keep their kids under control.
Most of the British people say that they lie to their children to save them from being upset or to stop them behaving badly. The top white lie told to kids about their pets is “Your pet has gone to live on a farm in the countryside”, which is used after a pet dies or has gone missing.
One 62-year-old man said that he couldn’t forget that when he was four, his parents told him that his cat had run away. However, after he grew up, he finally knew the truth — the cat had actually been given away. Another person said that he still remembered that when he was young, he believed his father’s words that the whole world used to be black and white.
Forty percent of parents say that they will certainly lie to their children if necessary, but over half say they will certainly tell the truth. However, one in ten parents say they have replaced (代替) their children’s dead pets with new ones looking the same to trick their children into believing they were still alive.

Mona Island is an amazing place to take a vacation. Some of the animals living there can’t be found anywhere else in the world. There are beautiful beaches and caves to explore. The sea around the island has colorful fishes. Why Is Mona Island Unusual
Mona Island is very small. The government of Puerto Rico takes care of the island and has made it a natural reserve. That means the island’s animals and plants are protected from being harmed by people. Mona Island is different from most places because people are not allowed to live there. Only a few park rangers are able to stay.
The park rangers’ job is to keep Mona Island safe and beautiful. They insist that rules be followed. One rule is that only 100 people at a time can visit the island. That way, the park rangers can make sure the land and animals remain safe.
What Is There to See on Mona Island
One thing that most people enjoy is getting to see the Mona Island iguana. This type of reptile
(爬行动物) lives only on Mona Island. Almost 2,000 of these iguanas live on Mona Island.
People also come to the island to get a close-up view of many kinds of fish and other sea
life. They can swim far below the surface. They use special equipment to be able to breathe underwater.
The water is almost transparent. Through the clear water, divers can see the bright colors of the fish.
Visitors can also explore caves. Some of the caves even have paintings and drawings on the
walls. This artwork was made by the Arawak and Taíno Indians who lived on the island hundreds of years ago.
After a full day of fun activities, visitors can settle in, listen to the night sounds, and view the stars in
the huge sky. Because the island is far away from other places, it is surrounded by darkness, and the stars
are easier to see. Visitors say that watching the stars is amazing. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day.

On the morning of July 10th, 2018, Dr. Tian Jiabing passed away at the age of 99. Most educators will be familiar with his name. Over the course of his life he donated (捐赠)80% of his wealth, building over 200 schools and 18,000 libraries across the country since the 1980s, earning him the title of “Father of 100 Chinese Schools”(百校之父).
Through years of hard work, Tian Jiabing had great achievements in business. However, in 1997, after the financial crisis(金融危机) in Asia, Tian’s businesses and foundations were influenced, making it difficult to fulfill promises of donations. In order to make donations as planned, Tian, at the age of 83, decided to sell his home, in which he had lived for 38 years, for 56 million HK dollars(港币). He then donated it to some schools in China, and moved into a small flat with his wife, In 2005, Tian also sold the 130,000-square-metre Tian Square at the price of 300 million HK dollars which was later donated to over 10 universities and high schools.
When he was interviewed, he said, “Since I had promised organizations my donations, I decided to sell my house to help these schools. This felt like a more worthwhile and meaningful action.” In interviews Tian expressed that education is linked to a country’s strength and cultural development. He said that spending money on education is “spending money in the most useful of places”, and that the value of education is far greater than the value of giving money.
Even though every donation was tens or hundreds of millions, Tian Jiabing lived a modest and simple life in Hong Kong. He was also strictwith his children. He insisted that it was better to leave posterity(名誉) to the next generation rather than wealth. Tian was respected by people not only because of his great honours, but also because he never asked for returns for his work. Besides his big donations, Tian also gave an example with small actions which help the society get better.
