Dorry Smith got on her blog the standard well-wishes on her 61st birthday yet she got some unusual messages too. One was about the Bush family who had just lost their five-year-old son to accident. His mother was in deep sorrow. Could Dorry help the mother
That message and the 20 or so others like it were exactly what Dorry was looking for. To celebrate her 61st, the retired teacher had put out a call on her blog. She wanted to commit 30 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who are in need of them. When she got the note about the Bush family, she sent a wind chime(风铃) with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am here with you” written on it. It now hangs in the five-year-old’s bedroom, where his sad mother can go to listen to it whenever she wants.
It is not the first time that Dorry has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 54th birthday in 2016, she founded Love in Action, an organization committed to doing something good in her city. Its aim is simple: Do Your Best, Show Your Love!
Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 50 strangers, some found via Dorry’s blog, others with help from her grandkids. The organization also shares inexpensive and creative gift ideas for others to help people in need.
Dorry pays for everything herself: gift cards pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs, and care packages, as well as the gas it takes to play fairy. Her family often gives her some extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she naturally ignores.“I got a couple of gift cards for my birthday this year and was like ‘YESSS!”It’s Dorry’s party, and I’ll give if I wants to.

Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2025.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety” — drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. In fact, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars met with distrust, and their high price tags drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars is starting to persuade critics. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion (内燃) engine models a run for their money.
As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the sea and sky. Electric boats are among the oldest electric vehicles, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric planes are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study's findings and replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free.
Even so, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.

Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture.
Culture begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the period of time when we first arrive in a country where everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from “jet lag” but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food.
Unfortunately, after we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture.
The third stage comes when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor.
The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This is called “reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!
12. When does culture shock happen
A. When you reach your teens. B. When you begin an urban life.
C. When you go to live in a foreign culture. D. When you meet foreign people for the first time.
13. How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock
A. Happy and excited B. Bored and homesick
C. Lonely and depressed D. Angry and frustrated
14. How could the third stage be described
A. Adjustment B. Rejection C. Enthusiasm D. Embarrassment
15. Why might reverse culture shock be a problem
A. It hardly ever happens. B. It is extremely stressful.
C. It is out of expectation. D. It only happens to young people.

I was always a reader. As a kid, I walked to the library several times a week and stayed up late reading with a flashlight.
As an English major at university I realised it had been more than two years since I had read most of familiar titles in my memory. I had stopped reading gradually, the way one heals or dies. _____16_____I joined book clubs that I never attended. I lingered between the shelves in a bookstore for hours as if catching up with old friends. I requested a library book everyone was reading, only to return it unread.
But it was clear to me: I was becoming a person I did not know. I was painfully aware of the glaring hypocrisy(虚伪) in my life. I defended the virtues of bookstores in the age of online retailing and bought books whenever I got the chance, but I hardly read them. They sat on every surface until my house appeared to wear books the way one wears clothes. ___17___.
The next time I visited a dollar bookstore I bought myself five titles for myself. My resolution to “read a book” echoed in my head. I picked up one I’d bought solely for its poetic title. ___18___The narrator was an old man, but he sounded more like what a young woman thought an old man might sound like. Whenever I was tempted to give up on it, I thought of my resolution.
___19___I loved the alternating (交替的) points of view. I carried the book to work. I read at lunch and on my walk home, occasionally lifting my eyes to avoid strangers. Back home I stayed up late, finally finishing it. ___20___The last time I’d pulled an all-nighter to read, I was 12 and the book was Little Women.
A. I was proud of myself.
B. I had a hard time getting into it.

E. I tried to maintain my bookish image.
F. I sat on the floor among the poetry, and I read it aloud again and again.
G. I pushed through the first two chapters and discovered a new narrator in the third.

As a little girl, Nia‘s with her family had to move often, finding shelter in rooms with relatives. Tensions rose with every move and shouting matches were constant. When everything came to a boil, Nia found it best to keep silent. She became more and more withdrawn as she got older, losing confidence in herself and her voice.
When she was a young adult, Nia had developed a fear of speaking. So when a friend told her about YouthCare’s Tile Project, she was terrified. However, Nia wanted to take steps to find a job and support herself, no longer relying on her family. So she finally took a deep breath and decided to give it a shot, for better or for worse.
Nia signed up for a ceramic (陶瓷) class. The passion she gained for learning a new craft was clear — but when it came to group activities in the classroom, Nia struggled. She told staff that she didn’t like being around people she didn’t know. So when the class was given the opportunity to sell their artwork at a local fair, Nia hesitated. With the support from YouthCare Career Coordinator, Kate, she cautiously nodded, willing to have a try.
When the big day came, shoppers poured into the fair, approaching Nia with questions about the program and art pieces for sale. Each time, red-faced Nia turned to Kate to whisper the answers in her ear, and Kate repeated the answers out loud with a smile. At one point during the fair, she was left alone for a moment. When a customer came up to ask a question, looking around and finding no Kate round, embarrassed Nia had to answer the question with hesitation. Soon after, another visitor came.
When Kate returned to her side, Nia finally could fight back her fears and answered their questions in a soft voice on her own.

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. C

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I was always a reader. As a kid, I walked to the library several times a week and stayed up late reading with a flashlight.
As an English major at university, I realised it had been more than two years since I had read most of familiar titles in my memory.
The next time I visited a dollar bookstore, I bought myself five titles for myself.
C. I still loved the idea of reading.
D. I resolved I would find myself back.
E. I tried to maintain my bookish image.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】Nia’s confidence grew with every interaction. She was not afraid to talk with people. By the end of the day, she was beaming. She turned to Kate and said, “Thank you, Kate. It was you that helped me overcome the fears.” “I am so proud of you and so impressed by what you have done. You really love explaining to customers how to fire ceramic,” said Kate. “The artwork you sold was the biggest sale of the day! Congratulations!” Hearing that, Nia jumped up happily.
That day at the fair was life-changing for Nia. She discovered that she truly enjoyed talking to others — especially about art! With continued support from staff to build communication skills and confidence, Nia completed the YouthCare’s Tile Project with flying colors. Now she is not the girl who likes to keep silent. Instead, she becomes a talkative girl and has made many good friends.
