You’ll need
·2 drinking glasses that are exactly alike

·Bathtub (浴缸)or shower
·Pencil and paper
Fill one glass with cold tap water and cool it with ice cubes. Don’t use a lot of ice, just cool it a little.
Fill the other glass with very hot water.
Pour both glasses out into the tub at the same time and speed. Repeat this process (过程) a few times, and watch closely each time.
Ask your helper to fill the glasses again and not tell you which is which. When you see the water splash in the tub, guess which one is the hot water.
Repeat several times. Keep score on your paper. You should be able to guess correctly more than half the time.
What happens
Cold water is more dense (稠密的) than hot water, so a cup of cold water is just a little bit heavier than a cup of hot water.

Recently, I went out to a bar (酒吧) with my friend Nicole. In fact, I didn’t know her that well as we had only met once before at a meeting. When I found myself in her town, we decided to meet up. Since we knew little about each other, we spent our time sharing stories, and she asked me many questions about my travels.
In answer to her question about what skills I had learned in my travels, I told Nicole that travel had greatly improved my ability to “read” people and situations.
“Oh, really Ok, then. Read my friends over there,” she challenged me.
So I offered her my opinions about her friends and the other people in the bar.
“How did I do ” I asked when I had finished.
“Wow!” She replied in shock (震惊).
How was I able to get those people in the bar right For sure, I knew nothing about mind games. I judged (判断) their personalities by reading their body language, facial (面部的) expressions, dress, and the way they chatted with one another.
Before COVID-19 appeared, I had been traveling quite regularly. When I was traveling, I couldn’t always understand what people were trying to say to me as most of them didn’t speak English. Non-verbal communication became very important. Whenever words failed, I depended on people’s facial expressions to sense their feelings. Based on how people carried themselves, I tried to work out how they really felt about something. The tone (音调) in people’s voices was quite helpful, too.
The more I traveled and the more I chatted with kinds of people, the better I became at “reading” people. It’s a useful skill. It can help me find out if a taxi driver is really “taking a shortcut (抄近路)”or if the people I just met at the hotel were being serious or funny with the joke they just told. It can also help me break the ice whenever I meet new people.
Traveling around the world has taught me a lot about how to read people and situations. If you travel a lot, you will be able to develop this ability, too.
56. What was the relationship like between Nicole and the writer before their recent meet-up
A. They had been close friends.
B. They used to work in the same office.
C. They didn’t know much about each other.
D. They are strangers to each other.
57. According to the article, how does the writer read people
A. By playing a clever trick on them.
B. By surveying some of their friends.
C. By having a short conversation with them.
D. By studying their clothes, expressions, and the like.
58. According to the article, the underlined words “non-verbal communication” probably means communication that ______.
A. takes place online B. does not use words
C. does not use English D. takes place between strangers
59. According to the writer, the skill of “reading” people is useful when he is taking a taxi because he can use it to ______.
A. find himself an experienced driver B. find out if the driver is being honest
C. let the driver try to take a shortcut D. make the driver willing to talk to him
60. What does the writer think about the ability to “read” people according to the passage
A. It is useful only when one travels abroad.
B. Sometimes it may be harmful to people.
C. Some people may find it easier to learn than others.
D. By traveling widely, anyone can develop this ability.
D
①Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument (争吵) Have your once warm conversations become cold You are not alone. Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.
②Teenagers’ physical (身体的) changes may cause such family problems. You may feel worried that you are developing at a different speed to your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice and weight problems. When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first you want to get angry with.
③It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental (精神的) needs too. You enter a strange middle ground— no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You hate to depend on your parents but have a continued need for their love and support. You feel ready to make decisions on your own. Unluckily, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. On the other hand, when you are trying to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient— sometimes they forget that growing up is a hard time. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can cause a breakdown in your relationship.
④______ The key to keeping the peace is regular (有规律的) and honest communication. When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. Explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefully, and make them free from worries. Through this kind of healthy discussion, you will learn when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.
⑤Just remember that it is common to fight with the stress and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy time will not last. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for your future.

A. So it’s difficult to get along well with your parents.
B. However, you can take action to improve the situation.
C. But how could this happen
D. But when can this come to an end
64. Which of the following is the structure (结构) of the passage

Choosing a career —something you’re thinking of doing for the rest of your working life —isn’t always easy but equally, it doesn’t have to be the agony (苦恼) that some people make it. Here are our tips to help you make up your mind.
Don’t let other people tell you what to do!
There are always people who want you to become a lawyer, or work in banking, or be a teacher. Listen to them, but remember it’s your life and it’s your decision, so be sure that you’re the one who makes that decision!
Consider what you think you're good at.
It’s true that things like salary (薪水) are important, but you should also consider other aspects when choosing a career. Follow your heart and your personality —if you’re not very outgoing, don’t go for a sales job, even if the pay’s good. In the same way, if you don’t like work that needs lots of attention to detail, think long and hard before you decide to do something like engineering.
Your first job isn’t forever.
Some lucky people get it right first time — they choose a job, find they love it and stick at it. But it isn’t always like that, so remember —you’re allowed to change your mind! Certainly, it’s no good worrying for years: maybe you’ve got three or four possible things you’d like to do, so choose and try one — and if you don’t like it, try another one.
Do something of value.
Some people choose their career simply because they think they’ll make huge amounts of money. OK, if that’s what you want. But generally, people get more satisfaction out of their career if they feel they are doing something of value to others. It doesn’t have to be charity work—it could be a job that helps other people, like being a child-minder. Just don’t forget that job satisfaction isn’t only about money.
Title: How to choose a career
66 Possible Reasons
Making your own 67 Just 68 when other people tell you what to do. Don’t 69 that it is your life and it is you who make the decision.
Considering your advantages (优势) Although the salary for a position is important, it isn’t the 70 thing you should consider when choosing a career. It’s important to 71 your heart and personality, especially your interest and your ability.
Allowing changing your mind It’s 72 for some people to get a right career first time You are allowed to change your mind about your 73 again and again at any time in your life.
Doing something 74 Doing jobs that will get high salary is OK, but doing jobs that help 75 can bring more career satisfaction.

One possible version:
To be a better Grade 9 student
As a Grade 9 student, I have to take on more challenges. However, if I keep making great efforts, I’m sure to be a better Grade 9 student.
I think planning time well is a good way to help us study better. So I always try to make a list of the things I need to do after entering Grade 9. Moreover, to improve my study, I not only listen more carefully in class but also finish homework all by myself after class.
To be a better Grade 9 student, I also pay attention to my lifestyle. I used to do little exercise, but now I spend one hour doing exercise every day, such as running and playing basketball. Because of that, I feel much healthier than before.
All in all, there is no success without efforts. I believe I’ll be more excellent if I keep trying. (121个字)
