I am Fionn Ferreira, an Irish teenager. I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day. I discovered, to my shock, that at present no filtration (过滤) for microplastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centers, so I started looking for a solution.
Seeing that there was none, I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the feerofluid (铁磁流体), a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets. After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of microplastics.
I grew up in West Cork, Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works. I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.
Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology (纳米技术), I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.
One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges. Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas.
Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing microplastics in our oceans worldwide.
8.What do we know about Fionn
A.He is studying at college. B.He lives by the sea.
C.He works for a science fair. D.He was born in America.

C.To collect plastic wastes in water. D.To remove microplastics from water.
10.Which of the following can be used to describe Fionn
A.Competitive. B.Creative. C.Optimistic. D.Humorous.
11.What is Fionn looking forward to
A.Seeing his project applied widely in real life.
B.Going to the science fair to get another prize.
C.Attracting more attention to his project.
D.Getting his project acknowledged by the judges.

Scientists have long said getting a good night's sleep is important to your health. The U.S. National Institute of Health says lack of sleep may even increase the risk of cognitive(认知)decline and Alzheimer's disease. Now,an American team of scientists reports that too much sleep might be similarly linked to such conditions
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine did the sleep study. The study examined 100 adults who had been under medical observation for cognitive ability, the ability to think, for an average of 4.5 years. The average age of the study subject was 75. Eighty-eight of the group had been identified as free of cognitive damage.Twelve subjects were judged very mildly damaged.
During the study, they were asked to complete several tests for signs of cognitive decline. The tests are combined into a cognitive score-the higher the score, the better. They also wore electroencephalography(EEG) devices for four to six nights to measure their brain activity during sleep.
Overall, cognitive scores declined for those who slept less than 4.5 hours or more than 6.5 hours per night -as measured by EEG(脑电图).But the scores stayed the same for those in the middle of the range.
Dr.Brendan Lacey is the director of the Washington University Sleep Medicine Center and led the research. He said,“Our study suggests that there is 'a sweet spot’for total sleep time for best cognitive performance.Short and long sleep times are associated with worse cognitive performance, perhaps due to insufficient sleep or poor sleep quality," Lucey added.
Greg Elder is a sleep researcher at Northumbria University in New Castle,Britain. He was surprised about the findings that sleeping longer than 6.5 hours was linked with cognitive decline. Elder wrote in The Conversation," Each person's sleep needs are individual. If people feel rested, there is no need to change how they sleep. " He also noted that it suggests that sleep quality may be the key, as opposed to simply total sleep time.
12.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The importance of a good night's sleep to health.
B.A study on how to improve your cognitive ability
C.The link between sleeping length and cognitive loss.
D.The result of increasing sleep time for short sleepers
13.What do we know about the 100 participants of the study
A.Most of them don't have cognitive disorders.
B.Some of them are suffering from lack of sleep.
C.All of the participants are more than 75 years old.
D.A few of them are under medical observation.
14.What do the underlined words “a sweet spot” refer to in paragraph 5
A.Insufficient sleep. B.Poor-quality sleep. C.Too much sleep. D.A middle range sleep.
15.What is Greg Elder's attitude toward the findings of the study
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Indifferent. D.Objective.

November 2, 2020 was a major anniversary for the International Space Station and marked 20 years since people first began living there. But the space station, in fact, spent 22 years in Earth’s orbit. 16
There were just three small rooms in the space station when the first crew arrived. There was hardly any space for them to move around. 17 Bill Shepherd, the station’s first commander, described his time living there as life on a ship at sea. 18 Communication problems could last hours. “Each day seemed to have its own challenging things,” Shepherd recalled recently. But the situation has come to a close long before.
Today the space station is almost as large as a football field. 19 Astronauts have near-continuous communication and even a phone to use personally. It takes only 90 minutes for the space station to circle the world. 20
Shepherd said the past 20 year of international experience and cooperation drives massive projects, like possibly sending humans to the planet Mars, and deserves studying and remembering.

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost destroyed America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation (破坏) and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettably initial shock; he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.
As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, heartbroken, saying: “My, son!” “My daughter!” Other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late! They’re all dead! You can’t help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there’s nothing you can do!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now ” And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins saying, “Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home.” To which this loving, caring American father asked, “Are you going to help me now ”
The police came and said, “You’re angry, anxious and it’s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!” To which he replied, “Are you going to help me now ” No one helped.
