Adonis Lattimore, 17, was born without a right leg, a partial left leg and only one arm. Although there were doubts from his classmates, Lattimore won Virginia’s Class 6 106-pound wrestling (摔跤) championship, capping off his high school career in a major way.
“That feeling when it finally pays off is the best feeling in the world,” Lattimore said. Lattimore’s wrestling career began in primary school when his dad found an ad about a local wrestling club and brought him to a practice. He was attracted and knew he wanted to continue in the sport. “After that, I never stopped going. I guess what kept me there was the competitive spirit and the friends I was meeting on the way,” he said. At times, others would judge his outward appearance, but he didn’t let the doubts weaken his drive. Instead, he remained focused on his technique and never once thought about giving up.
In March, Lattimore took part in his last regional match. Though he was filled with nervousness, he remained focused for each of the three-minute wrestling periods. Then came the moment he worked so hard for. His name was announced on the loudspeaker as the 2022 state champion. “I cried a little bit,” Lattimore said, “I watched so many finals from the stands or just from videos and to actually be the one to win it was a pretty dreamlike feeling.”
Lattimore is now planning on heading to college to continue wrestling and get a degree in computer science. Through his journey, he hopes to encourage other young athletes to enjoy the ride and do whatever they dream about. “Put everything you have into doing what you love,” he said.

Elevators (电梯) haven’t been updated much in 150 years but PLP Architecture wants to change that.
PLP’s IUMO, formerly known as the SkyPod, is an elevator that runs outside of buildings instead of inside. That means IUMO doesn’t just go up and down. It can turn and go in any direction the user requires. Unlike traditional elevators, IUMO runs on a track fixed onto the building’s outside.
In action it looks almost like a roller coaster-elevator hybrid as it goes up, down and circles around a building. However, the passengers inside IUMO aren’t rolling upside down with it. In fact, the futuristic elevator won’t even make your ears uncomfortable. IUMO works like a gyroscope (陀螺). The elevator car is totally stabilized (稳定), while the part that connects to the track is what turns. “It uses the same stabilization systems of high-speed trains,” PLP stated. “Driving this is a motor system similar to that used by roller coasters and Maglev trains.”
But the goal isn’t just to change elevators. It’s also to reimagine the experience of actually riding one. “Imagine such an elevator in which your journey begins at home, pauses at your favorite cafe and ends directly on your 55th-floor office,” PLP said.
The company believes that IUMO will be able to change the way buildings are designed in the future too. Traditional elevators, which require expensive equipment, already affect a building’s architecture.
“IUMO will allow for new types of buildings that, despite their height, match the city style,” PLP stated. “The elevator has been a primary influence on the shape and appearance of the modern city to date. We believe that the certain end of it will be the encouragement for the next chapter in the life of the city.”
12. In what way is IUMO special
A. It makes passengers roll. B. It goes up and down.
C. It runs inside the building. D. It goes in different directions.
13. How will the passengers in the IUMO feel
A. Comfortable. B. Nervous. C. Sick. D. Excited.
14. What influence will IUMO have on the building
A. Depth. B. Architecture. C. Application. D. Material.
15. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A. The elevator. B. The shape. C. The building. D. The city.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道,主要介绍的是一种叫IUMO的电梯的相关情况。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“That means IUMO doesn’t just go up and down. It can turn and go in any direction the user requires.(这意味着IUMO不只是上下波动。它可以向用户需要的任何方向转动和移动。)”可知,IUMO的特别之处在于它可以朝不同的方向转动。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“However, the passengers inside IUMO aren’t rolling upside down with it. In fact, the futuristic elevator won’t even make your ears uncomfortable. IUMO works like a gyroscope (陀螺). The elevator car is totally stabilized (稳定), while the part that connects to the track is what turns.(然而,IUMO内部的乘客并没有随着它上下翻滚。事实上,这种未来主义的电梯甚至不会让你的耳朵感到不舒服。IUMO像陀螺仪一样工作。电梯轿厢是完全稳定的,而与轨道相连的部分是转动的。)”可知,IUMO的乘客会觉得很舒适,故选A。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“The company believes that IUMO will be able to change the way buildings are designed in the future too.(该公司认为,IUMO在未来也将能够改变建筑的设计方式。)”可知,IUMO将对建筑的结构产生影响,故选B。
【15题详解】

I was hiking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Bard. I set off before sunrise. I planned to reach the top by midday, and return before dark to get to my hotel.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. There were trees all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who work around there. I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were beautiful, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard crazy barking behind me.
I turned and saw two dogs running towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see that they were black dobermans (杜宾犬). Their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to run.
I kept walking, saying, “Good dog, calm down,” as peacefully as possible. But I was terrified. Then one rushed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. He held on for a few seconds. And then he came back and bit me again. The pain took my breath away as I felt his teeth in my leg. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one attacked me. I was thinking I might not get out of this alive.

4. What does the underlined word “capping off” mean in paragraph 1

We all know reading can teach you facts, and knowing the right thing at the right time helps you be more successful. But is that the whole reason just about every smart, great person you can think of, from Bill Gates to Yu Minhong, credits much of their success to their reading Of course not.
In fact, beyond simply educating us, books have more benefits (好处). They provide inspiration, guide our decisions, and sometimes even change our lives. Reading a good book can be so amazing that you forget about your troubles for a while. On top of that, reading helps us understand people from different walks of life. It gives us a window into their minds and hearts. Reading has many positive effects on your body as well. Research shows that people who read are less likely to suffer from anxiety. Regular readers also have lower rates of heart disease than those who do not read at all or only watch television. It works better and faster than other methods of relaxation, such as listening to music or drinking hot tea.
Of course, you are reading right now, but sorry, it doesn’t count. The most important benefits come from devoting the time and attention to longer, deeper content. What type of reading is best for the brain They believe that reading a novel closely to study literature and thinking about its value is an effective exercise in the brain, more effective than just reading for pleasure. Don’t go fooling yourself into considering a look through Facebook as a brain workout.
I use Goodreads to track how many books I read, and try to increase the number every year. If you are inspired to get through more novels this year too, keep an eye on your brain’s performance too, to see if it’s making a difference. I can safely say that you’ll be amazed at the result!
But seriously, have you read any good books lately Let me know in the comments.

D. The city.

I was hiking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Bard. I set off before sunrise. I planned to reach the top by midday, and return before dark to get to my hotel.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. There were trees all around and a dirt road for the farmers who work around there.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为80左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作容。
