Math Holidays
Mole Day
Mole Day is celebrated annually on Oct. 23 from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm. It celebrates Avogadro’s Number (approximately), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. The first Mole Day took place in 1991 and has been honored every year since. The concept of a celebratory day was created by Maurice Oehler, a retired high school chemistry teacher. It aims to develop interest in chemistry, encouraging schools around the globe to celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry.
Fibonacci Day
Nov. 23 marks Fibonacci Day, a special day that celebrates tile man known as Leonardo Fibonacci who developed a mathematical concept called the Fibonacci Sequence, in which every number is the sum of the previous two numbers. So, for example, 11/23 marks the day because 1+1 equals 2, and then 1+2 equals 3 (the date being the 23rd). It may be somewhat difficult to grasp, but the concept is not entirely theoretical.
Square Root Day
Square Root Day is a holiday that occurs when the month and day are square roots of the last two digits of the year: e.g. 2/2/2004 and 3/3/2009. The last Square Root Day was 4/4/2016 and the next one will be 5/5/2025. The holiday was created by a high school teacher Ron Gordon in Redwood City, California, who noticed that an upcoming date (9/9/1981) represented a square root.
Pi Day
The granddaddy of mathematical and scientific holidays, however, falls every year on Mar. 14. The date, 3/14, represents the first three numerals in the calculation of pi; so the date is known annually as Pi Day. Pi Day was founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw working at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The event featured the eating of various pies, tossing pizza pie dough and parades and speeches.
28. Which holiday is linked to Avogadro’s Number
A. Pi Day. B. Mole Day. C. Fibonacci Day. D. Square Root Day.
29. Which of the following dates is a Square Root Day
A. Oct.23, 2020. B. Sept. 9, 2021. C. Mar. 14, 2030. D. Jun 6, 2036.
30. Who was the first man to celebrate Pi Day
A. Larry Shaw. B. Ron Gordon. C. Maurice Oehler. D. Leonardo Fibonacci.

When our flight left the Orlando airport that Friday morning, we were a happy group. After the plane took off, it was clear that something was wrong. The plane was bumping up and down. All the experienced travelers, including me, thought it was just a small problem.
However, we did not keep calm for long. Minutes later, our plane began going down quickly. Then suddenly, the plane climbed higher but that didn't help. It didn’t. The pilot soon made an announcement(通告).
“We are having some difficulties. Our hydraulic(液压)system has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando airport at this time. Fuel(燃料)will be dropped from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a bumpy landing. ”
All around, people cried and screamed. Then, I heard a calm voice, speaking peacefully. A mother was talking to her little daughter.
A picture flashed into my mind of another little girl who had recently survived a terrible plane crash. Her mother had put her own body over the little girl’s in order to protect her. The mother did not survive. The child was told over and over again that it had not been her fault(过错)that her mommy had gone away. I hoped this situation would not end the same way.
The mother said, “I love you so much. Do you know for sure that I love you more than anything ”
“Yes, Mommy,” the little girl said.
“And remember, no matter what happens, that I love you always. And that you are a good girl. Sometimes things happen that are not your fault. You are still a good girl and my love will always be with you.”
Then the mother put her body over her daughter’s and prepared to crash. Luckily, the landing was safe at last. I have been deeply impressed by the mother’s voice since then.
31. Which of the following shows the right order of the things
a. Fuel was dropped from the plane. b. The plane was bumping up and down.
c. A little girl survived a terrible plane crash. d. The mother talked to her daughter in a peaceful voice.
A. c-b-a-d B. c-d-b-a C. b-a-d-c D. b-a-c-d
32. What can we learn from the passage
A. The writer experienced two terrible flights.
B. The plane broken down because the fuel was too heavy.
C. The mother decided to protect her daughter with her own body.
D. All the passengers were afraid after hearing the pilot’s announcement.
33. What is the best title of the passage

Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place
Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.
The findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first-night influence”. In Japan they say, “If you change your bed, you can’t sleep,” said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers. “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.”
The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.
Sasaki said a lot of questions remain
Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night, or whether it “works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night”. They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.
For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “looking out for us” in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research; makes it harder to get the people to have a good rest when they need to wake up in the morning.
34. How many times did the researchers measure brain waves for 35 volunteers
A. Once. B. Twice C. Three times. D. Four times.
35. The researchers found ________ during the first deep-sleep period.
A. the brain waves remained the same B. the brain activity helped with sleep
C. the right half of the brain kept “watch” D. the left half of the brain was more active
36. The underlined word “calming” has the closest meaning to” ________”
A. pleasing B. different C. serious D. strange
37. What is the passage mainly about
A. What we will have to do to sleep well. B. How researchers measure brain waves.
C. Why it’s harder to sleep in a new place. D. Who doesn’t sleep well in a new place.

At 11, children go to secondary school where they may study 10 subjects including Maths, Sciences, English, History and one or more languages such as French. Classes in UK schools often have between20 or 30 students. Most schools do not make students sit in the same seat for every lesson.
