Dear Jane,
I am really sorry to hear that you feel bad after entering high school. I’d like to talk about
it with you.
In fact, in your high school, your classmates are also new students and facing the same
problem, so you don’t have to worry too much about it. There is also something that you can
do to change this situation. First, try to invite some of your classmates to take part in some
activities together after school. This will help you understand each other better. Then, help
your classmates when they are in trouble and turn to them for help when you have difficulty.
Finally, invite students to join in activities after school.
I believe you will make many new friends and have a happy school life there.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

Tyler was a troublesome student, who sat in the back row of the classroom. Every time I called
him to answer questions, he'd reply with a flip (轻率的) answer. If he got it wrong, he would get
very angry.
Usually kids could sit quietly in class. However Tyler was just loud. One day, Tyler was talking
while I was teaching. I said to him, “Tyler, why not join in our discussion instead of having one of
your own ” He got up from his chair, pushed it over, and shouted something I can't remember. I
sent him to the office and he received a week's out-of-school punishment.
The week was a wonderful time for me without the noisy Tyler, but when it came to an end, I
began to feel worried. So I came up with a plan. On the day of his return, I told him I wanted to start
over with him. If he felt like he was going to lose control in class, he could step outside the door for
a moment.
From then on, Tyler was a changed student in my classroom. In fact he was a smart child and
he even stopped a fight between two students one day. And he never used the privilege (特权) to
leave the class for a moment. I believe that just letting him decide for himself made all the
difference.
When the school year was over, he wrote me a thank-you note about how good the year had
been for him. I still have it today and find it very moving to reread when I get stressed about
teaching.

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering(递送)
milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a
5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one
day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to
change our order, my mother would pen a note — “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”
— and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically
(魔术般) appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between
families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so
cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr.
Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories
about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper
milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it
may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I
took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊) . Every so often my son’s friends will ask what
it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along
with his milk.
28. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer to __________.
A. show his magical power B. pay for the delivery
C. satisfy his curiosity D. please his mother
29. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house
A. He wanted to have tea there. B. He was a respectable person.
C. He was treated as a family member. D. He was fully trusted by the family.
30. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist
A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.
B. It has been driven out of the market.
C. Its service is getting poor.
D. It is not allowed by law.
31. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box
A. He missed the good old days.
4
{#{QQABCYYQogiIQAAAAQgCUwUCCAOQkBCAAKoGQBAEMAAAQRFABAA=}#}
B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C. He needed it for his milk bottles.
D. He planted flowers in it.

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose
not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to
college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on
to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but
without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of
the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to
share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various
cultures, getting more experience.
When there's a recession in the economy(经济) , those who attended college will be more
likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The
more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you
have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and
tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a
lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events
instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲
话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
32. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2
A.It offers you a chance to study abroad.
B.It can allow you to gain more knowledge.
C.It can improve the quality of your daily life.
D.It encourages you to travel around the world.
33. What does the underlined word "recession" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.change. B.drop. C.growth. D.support.
34. How can one benefit from a good education
A.You can gossip about others’ affairs.
B.You are likely to study well at school.
C.You can work well with your coworkers.
D.You get to know excellent people with similar interests.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A.The benefits of attending college. B.The exchange with other cultures.
C.The access to good networking. D.The ways of college education.
