At the beginning of human history, people could only eat food they found. But then people learned to find more ways to get food. About 10,000 years ago, people started to farm the land. After that, people developed farming skills.
People eat different food in different areas. In China, rice is the main food for people in the south while the people in the north eat noodles. People who live in European countries near the sea eat lots of fish. But in central Europe, people are away from the sea. So they don’t eat so much fish. They eat more special meat instead.
People eat food with different tools in different areas. In China, people always like using chopsticks while in North America, Australia and Europe, people always like using knives and forks. To our surprise, in India and the Middle East, people always pick up food with their own fingers.

At first, I wanted to give up the job because getting up too early in the morning made me unhappy. I’ll never forget how tired I felt on my first day, but I’ll never forget sitting together and talking about our days with my workmates for the first time either. Suddenly, I felt good to be a member of them.
After working at the convenience store for almost one year, I was used to getting up so early, because I knew there would be a few good moments every day there.
Working at the convenience store, I’ve learned to grow into a boy that can depend on myself and get along well with others. And I’m not the shy person that I used to be. My family joined an environmental protection club named Green Future—a club to remind people to protect the earth. So our family held an activity “bottle of rubbish task”. That means the rubbish needs to be put in a 600 ml bottle. We decided to test our ability and produce as little rubbish as possible.
My father worked online all day, so he didn’t produce any paper waste except paper napkins. He made the least rubbish in our family.
My mother cooked and produced plenty of kitchen waste, such as vegetable leaves, eggshells and food bags. What’s worse, we couldn’t eat up all the food of the dinner that day. So leftovers couldn’t be avoided. It was not easy for mom to deal with all the rubbish, but she found a way to put it all into the bottle. How amazing!
My sister, a 16-year-old student, was busy preparing for her exams. She had to use paper to work out math or physics problems. She used only one side of the paper in the past. But from then on, she tried to use both sides of the paper because she realized we were challenging ourselves. She did a good job!
I was different from my sister. I love snacks and drinks. So my rubbish was almost from them. I was highly alert (警觉的)that I must produce less waste. I hardly ever had snacks or drinks. It was too difficult, but I did it!
I’ve learnt a lot from this activity. I realize that everyone can produce less rubbish. We should start with small actions to protect the earth!

四、多任务混合阅读
阅读下面短文,按要求完成下面小题。
Do you know vocabulary is more important than grammar If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect. Here is the best method for learning English vocabulary.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully, is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (释义). You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
For example, if you just learn the word “generous”, write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adj.), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner, you’re very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps—writing the word and using it at once, help you remember and use new words.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook If not, start now.

56.例文
Dear Ms. Li,
I’m very glad to write to you. As a head student in our class, I feel very sorry that we have a lot of trouble these days. Every day we have a lot of homework to do at school. We don’t have enough time to sleep. As a student, we can’t learn well if we don’t have enough sleep. We nearly have no time to do sports. I think we should have enough time to exercise in order to keep healthy. My friends and I can hardly find time to talk or play together. As for me, when I get back home from school, I’m not allowed to watch TV, surf the Internet or listen to my favorite music. I feel worried about them. I don’t know what I should do. Could you please give us some suggestions
Best wishes,
Li Xue
