Great Changes in Our Hometown
In recent years, great changes have taken place in our hometown.
In the past, many of the people were poor. They lived in small dark houses and they were not happy. But at present, people in our hometown are much richer than before. Many of them live in modern tall buildings and they feel more comfortable. If they want to communicate with others, they can use phones, mobile phones, e-mails or QQ. But in the past, most of the people communicated with each other by letter. Only some made telephone calls to each other. And they went to different places on foot or by bike. But at present, people can go to other places by bus, by car or by taxi.
I hope we students will work harder to make our hometown more beautiful.2023-2024学年度上学期初四第二次质量监测

In a village there lived a man named Henry. He had a wish to let poor people have meals at his home every day. But his wife didn’t like this at all. She thought it a waste.
One day, when he was on his way to another village, he met a poor boy. He asked the boy to have his meal with him.
He said, “Please go to my place. I will be back home soon.”
The boy got to Henry’s house. The wife naturally got angry when she saw the visitor at the door. But she thought, “My husband is not at home. I must make this unwanted visitor go!”
So she welcomed him in and gave him a glass of water. Then she started to cry. When the boy asked her why, she said, “It is my husband’s idea to let people have meals at home. Then he ties them and beats them with a stick (棍子). That is the reason why I am sad.”
Hearing this, the poor boy was afraid and asked her to save him. The wife then let him out of the house through the back door.
When Henry returned home, his wife told him, “What a strange person the boy was! When he came in, he asked me for a stick and a piece of strong rope. I was afraid, and I said no. Then he left the house angrily.”
Henry said, “Maybe he wanted these for some use. Give me the stick and the rope. I will go and find him.” He started running after the boy.

For the British, the home is a private place in which he or she goes to the hide away from the troubles of life. It is very seldom that one would be invited to a British person's home. It is rude to knock on a person's door if you are not invited. If you are invited, don't ask to see more than the downstairs that your British host invites you into. Never ask how much the house or any of the items in it costs.
To the Americans, most of them want their home to be a place where they can entertain (款待) and share their lives with their friends. They may be delighted(高兴) to give you a full tour of their houses. They may also be pleased when you show your interest and pleasure in their houses.
Both British and American people will engage in quite a bit of chat and a drink or two before the meal is served. After the first mouthful, you should say how delicious the food is and ask something about it. Remember, never eat with your mouth open and make very little noise while eating. Last summer I went to one of the world's most famous historical places, the Forbidden City(紫禁城) in Beijing, China. It was the home of the emperors (皇帝) of the last two dynasties (朝代) in China, the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The Forbidden City was built in 1420. The palace has over 10,000 rooms. It was where the emperors deal with the official business with their ministers (大臣).

Marco Polo(马可.波罗 )was born in Italy in 1254. When he was 17, he travelled across Europe and Asia along the Silk Road with his father, who wanted to do trade with the Chinese. Finally they arrived in Beijing. Although Marco was young, he was very clever and could speak four languages. The Emperor was impressed by him and they became friends. He asked Marco to serve in his court and sent him to do many important tasks across the country. Marco was amazed by how beautiful and powerful China was.
There were inventions and developments in China which couldn't be found in Europe at that time. Marco was surprised to see Chinese people using paper money in the markets. In Europe, people didn't pay for goods with paper! He was also puzzled by the black stones people used to burn to produce heat. The black stones were coal, but Marco had never seen coal before!
In 1291, after 17 years of service to the Emperor, Marco returned to Italy. He was now a very wealthy man. A writer wrote down al the stories that Marco told him in a book called The Description of the World, which became one of the bestselling books in Europe.
Although people enjoyed reading the book, many of them thought that Marco's stories about China were too fanatic to be true. But Marco always stood by his tales.
