Xu Xiake was an explorer of the late Ming Dynasty who travelled huge mountains and deep valleys in China. He was one of the greatest explorers in Chinese history.
Xu’s travels were totally up to him and done on his own. He travelled so that his feet could feel strong winds beat his body; he travelled so that his feet could kiss the soil of the mountains.
After his death, Xu left behind his famous book, Xu Xiake’s Travels, which provides meaningful materials to the Chinese geological research. It included a record of what he saw, heard and thought about during his travels and was a personal diary that was not published during his lifetime. It was said that Xu was a filial (孝顺的) son and the beginning purpose of his travel diary was to allow his mother to travel the world through his eyes at home. He followed the ancient teaching that says, “When one’s parents are alive, one must not travel to far places.” For this reason, when his mother was still alive, he mainly travelled the southeast half of the country and would not leave home for too long.
The most important part of his travels was his ten-thousand-mile journey to the southwest. He travelled from Zhejiang to Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi, then Guizhou, and Yunnan. This journey took him four years and he wrote about ten times more than he did in the past. In the morning, he would be climbing the mountains and crossing rivers. At night, he would lay out a piece of paper and record his daily experiences beside an oil lamp.
Xu lived his life travelling mountains and rivers all day long. He was an outstanding person in history. In fact, Xu who lived 400 years ago was more like today’s backpackers-very cool!

Ten years ago, my husband and I took a summer holiday in Corfu, Greece (希腊).
On our last night, we wanted to get away from other tourists. So we put our best clothes on and set off at 7:30. Then we walked out of the town.
30 minutes later, we arrived at a good-looking restaurant full of local people. So we entered it and found an empty table. The people on the next table had the most delicious looking food. There were seafood, meat, salad, and everything. We decided to order the same. A lovely, smiling old lady came over to us but she didn’t speak English. So my husband just pointed to the food on the next table. Happily, she understood and brought us mountains of wonderful food. What a great time!
Finally, when we asked to pay our bill, the old lady just smiled. We were told it was free, because it was the lady’s birthday party and she was very happy we could join them.

Luckily, things are changing. Last year, many schools began to teach students life skills.
Guangming Middle School in Sichuan set up some farming clubs. There students learnt to plant vegetables. “At first I thought I could only grow some vegetables here, but actually, I learnt a lot about vegetables.” said Chen Jia, a girl at the school.
In Hope Middle School, students have a special life skill class: they learn to make dumplings in different kinds of shapes. “I couldn’t make dumplings before, but now I am good at doing it. I really love my life skill class. It’s my favourite class.” said Zhang Yan, a boy at the school.

Aunt Jia had a snack stand (摊位) in our neighborhood. Her snacks never failed to satisfy my stomach. What’s more, she was always patient with her customers. Even COVID-19 didn’t influence her business.
One day, during the last Spring Festival, I saw a large family visiting her stand. It formed a heart-warming picture: Each family member was enjoying being together. As they were leaving, I noticed Aunt Jia felt a bit sad.
I was amazed. In my experience, she was always smiling. I went forward and ordered my favorite snack. When she was wrapping (打包), I couldn’t help saying, “Happy New Year, Aunt Jia! Why don’t you take a break ” Aunt Jia looked surprised, but she soon replied,“Happy New Year! I love working here in this city. It’s too cold and snowy in my hometown.” I became more curious (好奇的). “Where do you come from Aren’t your family waiting for you to come home for the celebration ” Aunt Jia stopped for a few seconds. “They sure are”, she answered gently. “But I have to stay here. I’m from a mountain area, where it would not be easy to make money. I’d be comfortable if I were home now. But in order to live a better life, I must work hard.” I froze thinking about her words.
