There is always a discussion about whether you should get your kids to do chores (家务) around the house or not. However, it really has so many benefits (益处) to children that I find
it hard to see why you wouldn’t get them to do a few regular chores.
The most important reason is that getting children to do chores gives them a lot of life skills.
九年级英语学科第 4页,共 10页
They need to understand how to clean, how to cook, how to shop etc. It is, however, one of the things that schools don’t necessarily teach fully, so it is one of the main parts of learning
that is down to parents to provide for children before they leave home.
Children like to feel proud about their achievements. Helping around the house can really help to give them a sense of pride, and giving them praise for helping will make them want to
do more. They will feel happy to be able to help around the house, not just a bystander.
Giving your children a specific (特定的) job or a specific area in the house to look after
will help them learn how to be responsible in later life. They will see the benefit of keeping
things organized, clean and tidy and also appreciate (感激) more what you do for them as they
grow up.
Planning is a life skill that can be gained from helping around the house. As children get older, you can start to teach them how to understand the needs of themselves and others and plan accordingly (恰当地). For example, if they help with the washing, then let them make
sure that they do it in time. They may start to plan ahead.
All these reasons to get kids to do chores and help around the house mean that they’ll grow up with a great set of skills that can be of benefit to them throughout their lives. Why not get
started today

More than 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted around the world each year, with much of this food waste often ending up in rubbish bins. The worst part is that a lot of this food is still eatable when it’s thrown out. It’s a waste of the many resources ( 资 源 ) used in food production, including land, water, energy, and transportation (运输). What if there is a way to
cut down on food waste
In fact, many food products can be eaten long after the “use-by” date ( 保 质 期 ) that producers print on them. A UK company called Mimica has developed high-tech food labels (标签) that can clearly show whether foods are fresh. The labels can be placed on products or as bottle caps for drinks. A customer just needs to run a finger over the label or cap. If it is
smooth, the product is fresh. If not, the product spoils.
To stop food waste, people even invented an award-winning label called the Barcodiscount. It can change color to show increased discounts ( 折 扣). For example, 48 hours before a product’s “use-by” date, the label’s color can change to show the words “20 % off”, and then
24 hours before, the words “40% off”.
Of course, the most important thing in the fight against food waste is education. But
perhaps smart labels can take some of the guesswork out of food freshness.
43. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about
A. It costs a lot to produce food.
B. Food waste is a serious problem.
C. There is not enough food for human.
D. There are many ways to cut down on food waste.
44. What is special about Mimica’s food labels
A. They are very cheap to produce.
B. They are friendly to the environment.
C. They show whether the food is fresh or not.
D. They can be placed on any kinds of products.

A proverb (谚语) is a short, well-known saying that expresses a common truth or belief.
Proverbs are found in most cultures and are often very old.
In American history, Benjamin Franklin was a scientist, inventor and writer as well as a
leader of the American Revolution. 47 .
Franklin wrote a book called “Poor Richard’s Almanac” . It included many proverbs that he had heard or created. Some of them are still used today, like this one: “ Early to bed and early
to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”
Franklin is also remembered for other proverbs like, “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
48
Here are other examples of proverbs that Americans use. The first ones are about love. Some people say,“All is fair in love and war.” They mean that anything you do in a
relationship or in battle is acceptable.
49 In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may refuse to see
anything bad about that person.
Here is another popular saying about love: “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Some people believe that a woman can win a man’s love if she prepares his favorite
foods.
“ 50 ” This proverb is true in love and war or other situations. It means that what you
do is more important than what you say.
We have to stop here, so we must say,“All good things must come to an end.”
A .Actions speak louder than words. B .Another proverb says “Love is blind” . C .He was also famous for his proverbs. D .This means that money should not be wasted. E. You have a whole life ahead of you.
