Students in Cambodia have designed a prototype manned drone (无人机) from a rather unexpected piece of furniture — a school chair. Inspired at first by a desire to beat their city’s notorious (声名狼藉的) traffic, the group designed their prototype drone that they hope can eventually be used to ferry people around Phnom Penh and even fight fires.
With eight propellers (螺旋桨) and using a school chair for the pilot’s seat, the drone was developed by students at the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NPIC) on the outskirts of the capital. “The drone, when we see it flying without a pilot, there is a lot of shaking. But when I sit on it and fly... it becomes more stable and I feel so excited,” said LonhVannsith, 21, the pilot of the drone. “We wanted to solve some problems for our society by making a taxi drone and ... inventing drones for firefighters,” he said, noting how, for example, they hoped it could reach the upper floors of a building to bring a hose where a fire truck could not reach.
The prototype can carry a pilot weighing up to 60 kg and fly for about 10 minutes for a distance of 1 km. It took three years of research and development and cost around $20,000 to build. While the team hopes it will eventually fly far higher, when manned the drone currently only rises to as much as four meters.
The project faced delays because of lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic and also as components like the propellers and the frame had to be ordered abroad, said SarinSerevatha, who is NPIC’s head of research and development technology.
The team plans to improve the design to allow it to take more weight, as well as fly further and more stably at a higher level. “In principle, if we make one drone, the cost is expensive but if we make them to sell on the market, the cost will go down,” said Sarin.
24.What’s the original motivation for the design of the prototype drone
A.To avoid the busy traffic. B.To fight fires.
C.To earn plenty of money. D.To amuse people.
25.What does the team think of their invention
A.The team is very pleased with it. B.There is much room to improve it.
C.It is popular because of the low cost. D.It is stable enough to carry passengers.
26.Which word can best describe the students who designed a manned drone
A.Brave. B.Responsible.
C.Creative. D.Caring.
27.What’s the best title of this text
A.A Prototype Manned Drone B.A New Invention from Students
C.The Creative and Imaginative Students D.From a School Chair to a Manned Drone

In a major step forward for monitoring the biodiversity of marine(海洋的)systems, a new study published in the journal Environmental DNA details how Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute(MBARI) researchers are using autonomous underwater robots to sample environmental DNA(eDNA), which allows scientists to detect the presence of aquatic species from the tiny bits of genetic(遗传学的) material they leave behind. This “DNA soup” offers clues about biodiversity changes in sensitive areas and the presence of rare or endangered species-all critical to understanding and preserving a healthy ocean.
Researchers combined two novel autonomous platforms developed by MBARI for this study-the Long-Range Autonomous Underwater Vehicle(LRAUV) and the Environmental Sample Processor(ESP). The LRAUV can travel for weeks at a time and for hundreds of kilometers. It can enable more frequent sampling in remote sites than traditional research ships. The ESP is a robotic “laboratory-in-a-can” that filters(过滤) seawater and preserves eDNA for future study. By equipping an LRAUV with ESP technology, researchers can monitor the ocean better.
“We know that eDNA is an incredibly powerful tool for studying ocean communities, but we’ve been limited by what we can accomplish using expensive crewed research ships. Now, autonomous technology is helping us make better use of our time and resources to study previously unsurveyed regions of the ocean,” said Kobun Truelove, a biological oceanographer at MBARI and the lead author of the paper.
Marine biodiversity is a measure of the abundance of individuals and species in the ocean. This interconnected mixture of organisms supports food webs, produces the air we breathe, and regulates our climate. Autonomous tools like the LRAUV and ESP enable MBARI researchers to monitor changes in sensitive ecosystems in ways that were not possible previously.
“Ship-based research will continue to play an important role in oceanographic studies, but adding new autonomous technology to the toolkit will expand capacity for research, monitoring, and resource management,” said Truelove.
28.What do the underlined words “aquatic species” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Those living in water. B.Those growing near water.
C.Those becoming endangered. D.Those consuming eDNA.
29.What can the LRAUV do
A.Filter seawater effectively.
B.Preserve eDNA for future study.
C.Travel for months at a time in the ocean.
D.Reach remote areas of the ocean frequently.
30.What can we infer from Truelove’s words
A.Autonomous technology is more economical and efficient.
B.Ship-based research is more time-saving and energy-saving.
C.Autonomous robots have entirely replaced traditional research ships.
D.Crewed research ships help researchers study new parts of the ocean.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.Researchers Discover a “DNA Soup”
B.Autonomous Technology Needs Improving
C.Robots Sample eDNA to Monitor Ocean Health
D.The Biodiversity of the Ocean Needs Protection

As a junior economics reporter, I was once given an assignment to write a story about an economic concept I didn’t really understand. Just then, Martin Wolf, the chief economics commentator, walked past my desk. I took a deep breath and asked him. He explained it clearly in a few sentences, and if he thought I was a silly man because I had asked, he never made me feel that way. Ever since then, I have been a big believer in asking “stupid” questions, by which I mean questions that you fear make you look stupid. But I’m worried this is a dying art.
Best questions from students, the ones that they worry might be silly but are actually very useful, tend to come during breaks or on the walk between buildings after the lecture has ended. When teaching moved online, those opportunities disappeared. But many academics discovered online tools actually made it easier for some, students to ask questions. Platforms like Mentimeter added an extra layer of comfort by allowing students to ask questions without stating their identities. Some academics have integrated these online tools into their face-to-face lectures.
There is clearly some value in this. But what if we are losing something too The more we use technology to remove ourselves from the discomfort of asking questions, the more fearful we might grow about doing it face to face. One academic got so frustrated by the silence in lectures that he brought in a softball and told his students, “I’m going to throw this out and whoever catches it has to ask me a question. Any question.” He said they looked at the ball like it was a hand bomb.
Yet asking someone questions face to face can be the best way to ensure you really understand something. I know not everyone is lucky enough to have a Martin Wolf wandering by. But most people really don’t mind being asked something “stupid”. If they do, it is probably because they don’t really understand it themselves, or they have something to hide. In that sense, you learn something useful either way.
32.Why does the author describe his own experience in paragraph 1
A.To prove his belief. B.To praise Martin Wolf.
C.To speak of his worry. D.To share his experience.
33.What does the author think of online questioning tools
A.They are extra comforting. B.They are potentially harmful.
C.Their performance was terrible. D.Their value is beyond imagination.
34.How did the students feel when looking at the ball
A.Calm. B.Excited. C.Anxious. D.Surprised.
35.Which statement will the author probably agree with
A.Be confident, be successful. B.Communicate in a clever way.
C.Don’t be foolish in front of others. D.Ask more questions, understand better.
We all know how emotionally taxing being a college student can be with difficult assignments, hundreds of pages of reading and challenging tests. 36 Here are some strategies helpful for you.
●Recognize sad feeling moments as a must. Maybe you just find out that you get a bad grade in a test, or that you have a stressful presentation you need to start. 37 When you’re really upset about something, you’re not in the right mindset to do homework. You’d better calm down before attempting anything else.
●See stress as part of the college experience and relax yourself properly. When feeling stressed out, you can try giving yourself a 15-minute break between assignments to do what you like-watching videos, going for a walk, etc. If you have multiple classes that day, you can try taking the scenic route to class and enjoy the fresh air. 38
●Remind yourself that you’re just a human. This is hard but necessary. If you’re mentally incapable of attending that class, let the professor know that you can’t go. If you’re struggling but you have lots of assignments, see if you can get extensions or attend office hours to get help so you can feel less stressed. 39 So don’t push your sanity (理智) beyond its limits.
● 40 We have multiple places on campus for you to reach out. Don’t feel embarrassed about it. College life can be full of many things, and it’s completely normal to find yourself completely overwhelmed. But you have resources. There are lots of trusted people very willing to help you!
A.Look for good places.
B.Remember to ask for help.
C.As a person, you can take only so much.
D.It helps to keep you healthy and energetic.
E.It’s hard to balance college life and emotional well-being.
F.Regardless of your reasons, it’s okay to give yourself a break.
G.Doing something you enjoy between work intervals can really help.

One day, my 12-year-old daughter participated in a school poetry reading event. All her classmates were invited to write a “lie poem” about how 41 they were and read them aloud. They were supposed to 42 untruths about themselves that made them sound 43 wonderful. As I listened to the poems, I realized that the children were actually 44 the picture of their future. By “lying” to themselves, they were creating a 45 of who they wanted to be in the future.
I couldn’t help admiring the school for 46 the children to dream big in such a special way, even if it might not be the first intention. In fact, most of us are 47 to see the truth of who we could be. My daughter’s school developed an unintended 48 to that difficulty: If it’s hard for you to imagine the 49 in yourself, then you might want to begin by expressing it as a 50 , as did the children who wrote the poems.
Think up some stories about who you would like to be. In due course, this 51 exercise would help you build the necessary blueprint for 52 your achievements. Without a picture of your 53 self, you can’t live into that self. So 54 it till you make it. The lie will become the 55 in the end.
41.A.rich B.busy C.great D.smart

To protect the ocean and prevent plastic waste polluting the water, an Italian company has invented River Cleaning, 56 seems to be a perfect tool for picking up litter before it gets there. About 80 percent of ocean waste comes from 100 of the 57 (large) waterways across the world. So, stopping waste at its source is 58 excellent potential solution.
However, the company had to overcome several 59 (difficulty) before it could test out the invention 60 (proper). For example, its device had to allow boats to easily pass through, while being able 61 (run) 24/7 with no impact on the environment. The result is River Cleaning, a 100 percent effective, low cost, low impact solution.
Attached 62 the bed at the bottom of the river, River Cleaning is a series of buoys (浮标) that powered by the 63 (nature) flow of the river. It has the ability to collect different kinds of waste. So far, studies 64 (show) River Cleaning can collect 85 percent of all waste passing by it. So, if it is used in all the right places, that’s up to 85 percent of trash prevented from 65 (enter) flowing into the ocean.

I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play ” “Not today, baby.” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree (橡胶树). It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying sticks. “Look Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door (滑动玻璃门), talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs (细枝) break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.

W: OK. But they’re not in the fridge. The fridge is being repaired.
M: Oh, I forgot it. Honey, you know, our company is organizing a basketball team, and I’m thinking about joining. What do you think
W: Humph.
M: What do you mean by “Humph” I was the star player in high school.
W: Yeah, twenty-five years ago, and you are over 40 years old now. Look, I just don’t want you to have a heart attack running up and down the court.
M: So, what are you suggesting Should I just abandon the idea I’m not that out of shape.
W: You haven’t touched basketball since you left high school. I mean, you ought to at least have a physical examination before you begin.
M: Well, okay.
W: And you need to take up a little weight training to strengthen your muscles or perhaps try cycling to strengthen your heart.
M: Yeah, you’re right.

Text 10
Coldplay is a famous British rock band. The band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and won many awards. They also have supported various social causes. For example, they once made great efforts to reduce poverty. In their latest world tour, they plan to use their fans’ energy to help provide power for their musical performances, advocating ways that are sustainable for the environment. The band has added special dance floors to their latest tour. The floor creates electricity when people move on it during the performance. Each special dance floor can support many people. The band even has competitions before its performances to find out which group of fans can create the most electricity. Coldplay is not the only one working to reduce the effects of its tour on the Earth’s climate. A famous singer, Shawn Mendes, has promised to cut emissions by 50 percent for each show. He says he will use green materials in tour clothing, stay at hotels that promise to cut emissions and not use single-use plastic.

故选A。
根据文章第二段中的“The LRAUV can travel for weeks at a time and for hundreds of kilometers. It can enable more frequent sampling in remote sites than traditional research ships.(LRAUV一次可以航行数周,航行数百公里。与传统的科考船相比,它可以在偏远地区进行更频繁的采样)”可知,远程自主水下航行器(LRA UV) 可以经常到达海洋的偏远地区。故选D。
30.A推理判断题。根据第三段的句子“Now, autonomous technology is helping us make better use of our time and resources to study previously unsurveyed regions of the ocean,” said Kobun Truelove, a biological oceanographer at MBARI and the lead author of the paper.(“我们知道eDNA是研究海洋群落的一个非常强大的工具,但我们一直受到使用昂贵的载人研究船所能完成的限制。现在,自主技术正在帮助我们更好地利用我们的时间和资源来研究以前未调查的海洋区域”,MBARI的生物海洋学家、该论文的主要作者Kobun Truelove说)”可以推论出,自主技术更加经济、高效。故选A。
通读全文,特别是根据第一段中的“In a major step forward for monitoring the biodiversity of marine systems, a new study published in the journal Environmental DNA details how Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute(MBARI) researchers are using autonomous underwater robots to sample environmental DNA(eDNA), which allows scientists to detect the presence of aquatic species from the tiny bits of genetic material they leave behind.

根据文章第一段中的“As a junior economics reporter, ……But I’m worried this is a dying art.(作为一名初级经济记者,我曾经被要求写一篇关于一个我并不真正理解的经济概念的报道。就在这时,首席经济评论员Martin Wolf走过我的办公桌。我深吸一口气,问他。他用几句话解释得很清楚,如果他因为我问他而认为我是个傻瓜,他从来没有让我有这种感觉。从那以后,我一直坚信要问“愚蠢”的问题,我指的是那些你担心会让你看起来很愚蠢的问题。但我担心这门艺术正在消亡)”可推知,作者在第一段描述了他自己的经历是为了说他的担心。故选C。
33.B细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“The more we use technology to remove ourselves from the discomfort of asking questions, the more fearful we might grow about doing it face to face.(我们越是利用科技来消除提问带来的不适,我们就越会对面对面提问感到恐惧)”可知,作者认为在线提问工具有潜在的危害。
根据文章第三段中的“The more we use technology to remove ourselves from the discomfort of asking questions, the more fearful we might grow about doing it face to face. One academic got so frustrated by the silence in lectures that he brought in a softball and told his students, “I’m going to throw this out and whoever catches it has to ask me a question. Any question.” He said they looked at the ball like it was a hand bomb.(一位学者对课堂上的沉默感到非常沮丧,他带来了一个垒球,告诉他的学生,“我要把它扔出去,谁接住它就问我一个问题。任何问题。”他说他们看着球就像看着一个手炸弹)”可推知,学生们在看球的时候感觉焦虑。故选C。
35.D推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“But most people really don’t mind being asked something “stupid”. If they do, it is probably because they don’t really understand it themselves, or they have something to hide. In that sense, you learn something useful either way.(但大多数人真的不介意被问到一些“愚蠢”的问题。如果他们这样做,那可能是因为他们自己也不太理解,或者他们有什么要隐瞒的。从这个意义上说,无论哪种方式,你都能学到有用的东西)”可推知,作者可能会同意“问更多的问题,更好地理解”的说法。故选D。

注意:

Paragraph 2:
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced.

I knew I had to do something. The white dove and its mate had provided brightness during my dark days. Now it was time to help them in return. I cut a piece of hardware cloth, forming it into the shape of a nest and then securing the ends. I then hammered it into the wall next to the rubber tree. After I had finished all the work, there was only an hour before the doves usually made their visit. Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. Hearing my son’s excited voice, which was as clear as a bell, I looked up. There they were-swooping and circling near the nest, trying to add some twigs to their new home. A few weeks later, three babies broke free from their shells. “Chirp, chirp,” Matthew sang. I held him in my arms and kissed him, enjoying the happiness of the moment. Looking at their flittering shadows and hearing them chirp, I felt the dim grayness within my heart disappeared, replaced by the strength of life.
