① Reading is an amazing and fantastic experience that only humans can do. Just by looking at printed words on a page, we can travel across time and space in our mind. We can walk in the shoes of people who lived thousands of years ago. We can explore (探索) imaginary lands. We can make friends with fictional heroes. We can stare at the darkest, farthest corners of the stars.
② But let’s be real. Reading can be hard. That’s especially true when we’re tired, bored or faced with big words and ideas. Besides, reading can be much harder for some than for others. Luckily, scientists are looking into the ways our brains make sense of written language. Their studies have given us a few suggestions about how to make reading easier. By taking up these suggestions, reading can be an even better experience.
③ First, read in print whenever possible. There are several reasons for this. One is that our eyes will probably not skip over (跳过) printed words. However, we do this more often with on-screen words. Also, reading on a printed page helps the brain make a map of the information in our mind. That map, in turn, makes it easier to remember details (细节) in the future.
④ When we have to read on-screen, we can try making the size of the words larger. Words are easier to read when the letters are not close together.
⑤ Finally, when reading something difficult, such as a scientific article, use an active method. On the sides of a page, write down and explain new words. Translate difficult paragraphs into a form that is understandable. Most importantly, be patient. Our brain is taking these words and making them mean something. That is an unbelievable skill, no matter how long it takes us.
42. Which question is answered in the first two paragraphs
A. What kinds of stories should we read
B. Why is reading sometimes hard
C. What is the development history of books
D. How do our brains make sense of written language
43. What does Paragraph 4 tell us
A. Good books to read on-screen. B. Good ways to help read on-screen.
C. The reason why people read on-screen. D. The reason why reading is a good habit.
44. How can we deal with difficult texts according to Paragraph 5
A. By copying them. B. By increasing reading speed.
C. By writing them in our own words. D. By reading them over and over again.
45. Which is the right structure of the passage
A. ①/②/③④⑤ B. ①②/③④/⑤ C. ①②/③/④⑤ D. ①/②/③/④⑤

As the saying goes, “A smile is the best medicine.” Nothing can make a sick heart feel better than a warm smile. When you smile, your brain (大脑) produces some special chemicals (化学物质). Together, they work to make you feel calm and relaxed. Smiling more often can even make your immune (免疫的) system stronger.
World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday of October every year. The holiday was set up by American artist Harvey Ball. Ball created his famous yellow smiley face symbol in 1963. People loved it and more and more businesses began to use it. Ball became worried that the symbol was losing its original (最初的) meaning. To encourage people to spread the “real” smile, he came up with the idea for World Smile Day.
The theme (主题) of the day is, “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.” This can be as simple as smiling at everyone you meet. You can also cook a dish for your parents or give a small gift to your friend. It would be even better if you could do some volunteer work, such as helping the elderly and cleaning up the environment.

at printed words on a page, we can travel across time and space in our mind. We can walk in the
shoes of people who lived thousands of years ago. We can explore (探索) imaginary lands. We can
make friends with fictional heroes. We can stare at the darkest, farthest corners of the stars.
② But let’s be real. Reading can be hard. That’s especially true when we’re tired, bored or
faced with big words and ideas. Besides, reading can be much harder for some than for others.
Luckily, scientists are looking into the ways our brains make sense of written language. Their
studies have given us a few suggestions about how to make reading easier. By taking up these
suggestions, reading can be an even better experience.
③ First, read in print whenever possible. There are several reasons for this. One is that our
eyes will probably not skip over (跳过 ) printed words. However, we do this more often with
on-screen words. Also, reading on a printed page helps the brain make a map of the information in
our mind. That map, in turn, makes it easier to remember details (细节) in the future.
④ When we have to read on-screen, we can try making the size of the words larger. Words
are easier to read when the letters are not close together.
⑤ Finally, when reading something difficult, such as a scientific article, use an active
method. On the sides of a page, write down and explain new words. Translate difficult paragraphs
into a form that is understandable. Most importantly, be patient. Our brain is taking these words
and making them mean something. That is an unbelievable skill, no matter how long it takes us.

As the saying goes, “A smile is the best medicine.” Nothing can make a sick heart feel better
than a warm smile. When you smile, your brain (大脑) produces some special chemicals (化学物
质). Together, they work to make you feel calm and relaxed. Smiling more often can even make
your immune (免疫的) system stronger.
World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday of October every year. The holiday was set
up by American artist Harvey Ball. Ball created his famous yellow smiley face symbol in 1963.
People loved it and more and more businesses began to use it. Ball became worried that the
symbol was losing its original (最初的) meaning. To encourage people to spread the “real” smile,
he came up with the idea for World Smile Day.
The theme (主题) of the day is, “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.” This can be
as simple as smiling at everyone you meet. You can also cook a dish for your parents or give a
small gift to your friend. It would be even better if you could do some volunteer work, such as
helping the elderly and cleaning up the environment.
