46.Dear Jim,
Knowing you are conducting a survey of the housework that high school students do at home, I
feel very pleased to offer you some information about it.
Although my school schedule is rather tight, I still manage to help with varieties of household
chores, ranging from cleaning the house and doing the laundry to feeding the pets, and doing the
dishes. I consider it beneficial for high school students to do some housework. For one thing, by
doing housework we learn to take responsibility at home, and in the longer term, in society. For
another, I find the time spent doing housework with my parents really fun and rewarding.
Good luck with your survey.
Yours,
Li Hua
47.On LinkedIn, Priyanshi made a post all about Sahil and her encounter with him. She
emphasized that he is more than qualified to do great work for someone, even going so far as to
share images of his degree.” If someone has any openings for an office boy, administration work,
customer support etc., please help a fellow out!” she wrote.” I’m not sure whether his appeal was
absolutely genuine or not, but the least we could do is try. Please do like and repast so that it
reaches more people in your network.”
Priyanshi called out for help and folks listened! Her post got over 12,000 reactions, even
though she only shared it five days ago. Some people left their phone number for Sahil to contact
them. Others called Priyanshi expressing their willingness to help with various necessities. And a
man declared he would offer a position to Sahil.Sahil got a job! Both Priyanshi and Sahil were
deeply moved, saying “Thanks everyone who came forward! You are all awesome.” Life can
change in an instant, and we’re so happy that Sahil was able to see that first-hand!

Are you a different person when you speak a foreign language That’s just one of the
questions The New Yorker’s writer and native North Carolinian Lauren Collins explores in
her engaging autobiography, about her tough efforts to master French after marrying a
Frenchman whose name — Olivier — she couldn’t even pronounce properly. When in French
ranges from the humorously personal to a deeper look at various theories of language
acquisition and linguistics.
The couple met in London “on more or less neutral ground: his continent, my language.”
But the balance shifted when they moved to Geneva for Olivier’s work. The normally voluble
Collins found herself at a loss — “nearly speechless.” The language barrier, and her
dependence on her husband for simple things like buying the right cut of meat worsened her
mixed feelings about “unlovely, but not ridiculous” Geneva. She comments, “Language, as
much as land, is a place. To be cut off from it is to be, in a sense, homeless.”
Her sense of alienation (疏离感) leads to an examination of America’s miserable record
when it comes to foreign languages: “Linguists call America ‘the graveyard of languages’
because of its singular ability to take in millions of immigrants and make their native
languages die out in a few generations,” Collins writes. Educated in Wilmington, N.C., and
at Princeton, she could — like the vast majority of Americans — only speak their mother
tongue.
Eight months after she moved to Switzerland, Collins gave up on the natural acquisition
of language and finally enrolls in a French course. As she struggles with grammar and
vocabulary, Collins notes smartly that vert (green), verre (glass), ver (worm), vers (toward),
and vair (squirrel) compose a quintuple homonym (同形异义 ). “Although it’s difficult,
French can be tried,” she says.
Yet French is actually considered among the easiest languages for an English speaker to
learn, especially compared to Arabic or Mandarin Chinese. Collins, whose notably rich
English vocabulary includes glossolalia (nonsense speech) and shibboleth (catchword or
slogan), finds plenty of terrific French words to love. She writes, “English is a trust fund, an
unearned inheritance, but I've worked for every bit of French I've banked.”
Unlike Jhumpa Lahiri, who became so hooked on Italian and used it to write In Other
Words, Collins’ goals for learning French were more modest: “I wanted to speak French and
to sound like North Carolina.” She also wanted to be able to deal with chimney sweeps and
butchers, communicate with her in-laws, and “to touch Olivier in his own language.” She
admits that she feels different speaking French: “Its austerity (朴素 ) made me feel more
confused.”

From Santa Barbara to Scotland, strangers are becoming friends by going on bike
rides together. They get paired up by Cycling Without Age, an organization that helps
seniors go for bike rides, even if they can t pedal themselves.
Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence, who are roughly 20 years apart in age, have been
riding together for years. The 56-year-old Lawrence serves as a “pilot”, driving the
trishaw — a bike with a passenger seat in the front that Cycling Without Age uses for
their rides. They go for rides about once a week, often discussing the history of their
town.
"Despite my deceased parents, it gives me a connection with people from an
older generation, ”said Lawrence, “and I enjoy spending time with them and hearing
their stories. ”The pair have formed a friendship outside of cycling. Lawrence said he
calls Lyon often and goes to the gym with him to help him with exercises he can t do on
his own.
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age, said that s the power of the
program. “The truly powerful thing about these bike rides is that they tie people and
stories together to create new relationships,” he told CBS News. “In my experience,
friendships — and the ability to form new relationships at any age — are what define a
good life, and often also a long and happy life. ”
John Boettner started the Santa Barbara chapter. He has one rule for passengers. “They say,
What does it cost if I m going to go for a ride I say, Here s what it costs: You have to
wave. If you don t wave, I m going to kick you out, ” he joked. He said he likes when
they hit red lights, because it gives them a chance to connect with people on the road.
“Driving the trishaw is the best advertisement for Cycling Without Age”, Boettner said,
“When you take a 101-year-old woman for a bike ride and she holds your hand tight and
says thank you and gives you a kiss on the cheek, it doesn t get any better than that.”
4.What did Lawrence benefit from Cycling Without Age
A.Picking up forgotten stories.
B.Improving his health condition.
C.Understanding his parents love.
D.Creating a relationship with seniors.
5.Why did Ole Kassow mention “friendships”
A.To share the pleasure of cycling.
B.To state the nature of happiness.
C.To show the value of the program.
D.To introduce the definition of a good life.
6.What can we learn from Boettner s words in the last paragraph
A.The program needs to be advertised.
B.Passengers have to pay for their rides.

Clown fish live their adult lives in the protective arms of sea anemones, the small
brightly colored sea animals. Between birth and adulthood, however, the fish have to
complete a treacherous journey. After hatching, they swim out to the open sea to finish
developing. After maturing, the young fish swim back, during which they have to avoid a
“wall of mouths” by sensing the unfriendly smells. With ocean acidification, a trend that is
occurring worldwide, scientists began to wonder what might happen to fish’s sense of smell.
My team put 300 recently hatched clown fish in our lab. When we introduced a friendly
fish odor (气味), they did not react. But when we introduced an enemy odor, they swam away.
We then repeated the experiment with 300 new hatchlings from the same parents in the more
acidic water—a level by 2100 if current trends continue. When we introduced friendly and
unfriendly smells at the same time, the fish seemed unable to determine, spending equal time
swimming toward one smell and the other. They could sense chemical signals but couldn’t
recognize the meaning of them.
It is always tricky to say that behaviors in a lab would also be seen in the wild. So we
continued to test how wild-caught damselfish would react to enemy smells after exposing
them to acidic water. In a tank, about half of them held in water with acidity expected by
2050 were attracted to the unfriendly odor and half were not, yet not one held in water
anticipated by 2100 avoided being attracted to the enemy odor. The marked damselfish once
held in the most acidic water swam farther away from their protective home.
Can fish adapt Most studies have habituated fish to lifted acidic conditions over a few
days or months. Yet some scientists thought that fish might escape the anger of ocean
acidification, in part because early research showed that certain animals had an astonishing
ability to regulate their internal chemistry to survive acidified water. But maintaining normal
functions such as avoiding danger is a different challenge.
Further, if many ocean creatures start to behave strangely, entire food webs and
ecosystems could come crashing down. Although the science is still new, the results appear to
be lining up: ocean acidification is messing with fish’s minds.
8. What does the underlined word “treacherous” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Risky. B. Hurried. C. Mysterious. D. Helpless.
9. What can we learn about the fish in the acidic water
A. They lost their senses to chemical signals.
B. They were less likely to respond to threats.
C. Their behavior in the lab disappeared in the wild.
D. They tended to seek the protection from their home.
10. What can be inferred from the passage
A. The author’s study confirms previous findings.
B. Fish’s adaptation to acidic water is a matter of time.
C. Different fishes behave differently to acidity change.
D. The chances of restoring fish’s minds are yet to be seen.

Researchers of the University of Missouri analyzed survey data of 2,300teachers from
Missouri and Oklahoma who were asked to rate how stressed they were at work, if they found
ways to deal with work stress and how satisfied they were with their jobs. The study found
teachers who struggle to deal with the stress of their job report far lower job satisfaction
compared to teachers who find ways to manage the pressure. While the findings were not
particularly surprising, the study highlights how the ability — or inability — to deal with
work stress can be a significant factor contributing to teacher burnout, which ultimately leads
many teachers to leave the profession.
This research confirms that it is necessary to start devoting more time and resources to
helping teachers identify and adopt healthy coping mechanisms (应对机制). Finding ways to
relieve teacher stress and investing in ways to help them deal with stress in positive manners
will pay back in not having to constantly hire and train new teachers all the time. In addition,
keeping experienced teachers will likely benefit student achievement as well.
The researchers explained that positive, healthy coping mechanisms can be quick, easy
and free. One healthy coping mechanism they suggest for stressed teachers is writing and
delivering a short letter of gratitude to a colleague they enjoy working with. Simple things
like increasing positive interactions with students and peers, improving classroom
management skills, and avoiding gossip (闲话) at work can also help.
School principals, district superintendents and school administrators can all play a role
in supporting stressed teachers who may be struggling to cope. They should communicate
with teachers about their concerns, show empathy (共鸣 ) and check in on their health and
well-being to show the care. The overall goal is to create school environments that allow
teachers to develop and give them the tools they need to be successful.
12.Why is it necessary to adopt healthy coping mechanisms for teachers' stress
A.Because it can prevent teachers leaving the profession.
B.Because it helps to replace old teachers with new ones.
C.Because it could help reduce dropout rates of students.
D.Because it contributes to new teachers' train and development.
13.Which of the following disagrees with recommended healthy coping mechanisms
A.They are simple for most teachers.
B.They can take little time and money.
C.They involve many little everyday things.
D.They encourage communication of any kind.
14.How can educational administrators relieve the pressure on teachers
A.By setting up better working conditions for teachers.
B.By asking teachers to increase the student achievement.
C.By requiring teachers to adopt the latest teaching methods.
D.By ordering teachers to improve classroom management skills.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.Reasons for teacher burnout. B.Ways to relieve teacher stress.
C.Skills for classroom management. D.Paths of teacher professional growth.

You never know when a chance encounter will change your life. Sahil Singh certainly
didn’t expect anything to come from yet another delivery he was set to make less than a week
ago with Swiggy, a food delivering service in India. Before the life-changing moment,
however, came a series of events that had Sahil feeling hopeless. It all started when he moved
home.
Years ago, this well-educated young man had a job that gave him a good salary, but his
circumstances since the move have changed drastically. With no other job prospects, he began
working for Swiggy, where he was barely making ends meet. In fact, he found himself in debt
and without a car, a scooter, or even a bike.
Then, on the day of his chance encounter, Sahil found himself completely out of money.
He spent the last of his money on his roommate, who had developed a serious disease,
leaving him with nothing to pay the landlord. To make matters worse, he was given an order
to deliver what would take him nearly two miles, all on foot.
As he worked hard to get the food delivered as soon as possible, the customer, Priyanshi
Chandel, was waiting patiently for her ice cream. After 30 to40 minutes, Sahil finally rang her
doorbell. The state he was in left her shocked.
“I opened the door to see a young man panting for air, sitting on the staircase outside my
flat,” Priyanshi said.” With all my alarms triggering(触发 )within me, I asked him what
happened.”
When given the opportunity to share his story, Sahil graciously took it. Here counted
how he got to where he’s at today, including the fact that he had not eaten for a week and was,
instead, getting by on water and tea.
Wanting to help, Priyanshi offered Sahil all that she could: a glass of water and some
cash. But then, she thought of one more thing she could do that might help.
