These children's museums in New York City are among the best family attractions and offer energy-burning excitement with a little education.
DiMenna Children’s History Museum
Contact: nyhistory.org/ children’s-museum
At the hands-on displays through 350 years of US history, children are encouraged to climb around and interact with exhibits that highlight the lives of kids who grew up to become famous doctors, athletes and political figures. Other family programs include cooking classes, games and story hours.
New York Hall of Science

Here, hundreds of interactive exhibits and activities bring science, technology, engineering and math to life. Rather than being a place to learn math, it's a place to realize all the remarkable things math can be used to create. Kyle was a boy in my fifth grade class. When we sat across from each other, he would reach his legs and step on my foot, causing rapid pain. Eventually, my seat was moved. But Kyle's abuse didn't stop. His words were annoying to an eleven-year-old girl. Kyle also bullied my friend Megan. At one point she ran out of the classroom because he copied her nonstop. Despite meetings with teachers and parents, nothing changed.
Then one day, Kyle forced me into a wall and insulted(侮辱)my brother. With my teacher standing behind me, I told Kyle exactly how much he had hurt Megan and me physically and emotionally. I had tears streaming down my face, but I didn't care. In the end, I cheered inside as Kyle quietly apologized.
Kyle's teasing didn't completely end, but it definitely subsided, and the final month of school went by fairly smoothly. Kyle was going to a private school the next year. I had only seen Kyle once, at a movie theater. We didn't speak, and pretended we didn't see each other.
Later one night as I thought about the marks he'd left on the tops of my feet, the words, and the pain, I felt no hate for him. Instead, I felt pity. This boy, who had ruined much of my fifth grade experience, had probably been going through his own issues then. He was obviously mad at the world and maybe he was simply taking that anger out on my friend and me. I felt that being angry with Kyle for what he had done was like drinking poison and expecting him to die. By holding my hate for Kyle inside, I was only hurting myself. That night, by letting go of that pain, I felt free. With forgiveness, we can let go of unnecessary burdens and truly own our lives.

The COVID-19 forced 57th Street Books in Chicago to close its doors. Director Jeff was worried. Customers couldn't come to the shop. His main advantage over online bookstores has disappeared overnight.
Jeff says he was lucky. Customers stepped up, offering gifts and support. Similar stories have played out over the past two years in cities and towns around the country. Though independent bookstores were forced to close during the pandemic, many found ways to connect with and help their community.
Before the pandemic, bookstores were already having a hard time competing with online bookstores. Then came COVID-19. It broke supply chains and caused labor shortages. But many stores turned things around with new ideas. Some put books outside for viewing and started events online. Others set up bookselling hotlines, sold books out of cars, and improved their tools for e-commerce. Some bookstores offered COVID testing or collected food for people in need. “Having an independent bookstore in your community is an important place to build community,” says Samira, an author of books for young adults.
One young fan of 57th Street Books is Adele Sorkin, 11. Members receive early copies of books in exchange for writing reviews. “I think of the bookstore as a biscuit jar,” Adele says. “It's something special and fun that is always there for you.”
“If we reimagine bookstores and make an effort to support them, then bookstores can long survive. You can support your local bookstore and buy books there, or check if an author is making an appearance there, Recommend the store to a friend. Young people are responsible for creating a society that values bookstores and a shared love of literature,” Jeff says.

Experts often tell students to center their efforts on a narrow field to get a job after school. But recent research into Nobel Prize winners suggests that wider interests are important.
One of the winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry was 68-year-old Danish scientist Meldal. When describing his career,Meldal said he started as an engineer but changed to chemistry because he wanted to understand the world.
In a discussion with the Nobel Prize organization, he talked about his co-winner, Carolyn Bertozzi of Stanford University. He said, “She has such broad knowledge of both chemistry and biology and she knows how to use her knowledge in a clever way.”
Meldal's experience and the way he sees things may come as a surprise to students. They might believe they have to center their work and school lives in one field to be successful. But a study from professors shows that is not always the case. They said that a large number of Nobel Prize winners can be described as“polymaths”,people who have many different interests in both their work and personal lives. This permits scientists to look for creative ways to solve problems. In fact, one important part of science is not discovering answers, but recognizing problems that need to be solved.
The researchers say that Nobel winners are nine times more likely to have experience in working with wood, metal or in the arts than most scientists. They pointed to a 2012 report about students who study two majors(专业;主修者)in college. Double majors are often more creative and more interested in starting their own businesses. Other researchers have found that having an outside activity like playing chess, performing music or creating art can help predict future success in a job.
32. What do experts often advise their students to do
A. Devote their time and effort to their related field.
B. Develop a wide interest besides their majors.
C. Pay attention to hot topics in their research field.
D. Keep a good balance between their work and life.
33. What is “polymath”
A. A person ready to do research and learn art.
B. A person with creative ways to solve problems.
C. A person with college degrees in different majors.
D. A person with different interests in their work and personal lives.
34. What can be said about double majors
A. They like to create material things. B. They can recognize problems fast.
C. They can work more creatively. D. They're successful businessmen.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Double Majors Are Business Bosses B. Wide Interests Count for Noberl Prize Winners
C. Studying a Major Isn't Enough to Win a Prize D. Creative Thinkers Are Preferred for Getting Prizes

It also means that you will have a record of all the good things you've experienced. You can read it when you're having a bad day.
A. What is a gratitude diary B. It doesn't have to be special C. Where can I start my gratitude diary D. There are times when you can get worried or scared E. 第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a sunny afternoon in July, my husband Lenny took the garbage to the town's landfill(填埋场). After unloading, Lenny walked around to see what others had thrown away. Being a person who finds treasure in what others call trash, Lenny would sometimes bring home what he called “great finds”,though our five-year-old daughter Cindy always disliked him doing so.
Since it was a small-town landfill , it was never monitored(监控),and the gates were locked only at night. As Lenny walked around that day, he heard a“meow”and looked around but saw nothing. Then he saw a shoebox in the garbage pile move slightly, and he heard the cries again. When he picked up the box, cut the tape and carefully tore open the shoebox, he found a black-and-white kitten, about eight weeks old. He will never forget the terrified look in the kitten's eyes after he removed the lid. It was so frightened that it jumped into his arms and held him with its tiny claws.
The kitten was not wild and was already familiar with humans. It wasn't afraid of him. The poor thing was very thin and had probably been taken away from its mother only recently. Someone had cruelly left that kitten to die there on the landfill.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Lenny knew he couldn't leave the kitten there, even outside the box. ____________________________________

One possible version:
Dear Robert,
How are things going with you A whole term has passed before I knew it, and now the winter vacation is approaching. In the recent English speech competition held in our school, I had the honor to win the first prize. You can’t imagine how proud I felt at the moment, standing on the stage receiving the first prize. The theme of the competition is "With my motherland in my heart", for which I had made careful preparation. And now I can’t wait to share my pleasure with you.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Lenny knew he couldn’ t leave the kitten there, even outside the box. If he left it there in the rubbish, some large animals would attack it, or it would starve. So he decided to take it home. After all, he already had a pet dog home, and now the dog and cat would be a perfect match. So he took it home in the box. Seeing the kitten in the box, Cindy didn’t show any sign of displeasure. Instead, she liked it. Then, we gave the kitten a bath and named it Angel. Therefore, she came to stay with us.
Angel grew up on the loving attention from our daughter and enjoyed the company of our pet dog Cora. When we were in the house during the evening, relaxing in front of the TV, Angel would sit on the back of the sofa behind my husband where he could touch him. We believed that Angel was grateful for the rescue on that day, and we often talked about "the treasure" that Lenny found at the landfill.
