Fran oise Malby-Anthony, a city girl, a Parisian through and through, could tell the quickest way to the Eiffel Tower but knew nothing about animals. Yet somewhere deep inside, she always felt she would end up in a foreign country.
It was her husband Lawrence Anthony, a South African, who brought out the wanderlust in her. They met in London in 1987, and a year later they moved to South Africa, where they were drawn by nature and eventually bought Thula Thula — a game reserve of river and 1,500 hectares of rolling hills. They were soon working to save an abundance of wild animals, especially elephants and rhinos, from the poachers and hunters who roamed for fun and profit. They also employed some locals, and taught them about office work, dealing with guests and cooking French dishes.
Last March, however, Lawrence died of a sudden heart attack. And there Francoise was, alone, burying her husband, and didn’t know where to begin.
She soon faced her first baptism (洗礼) by fire. A few days later, she received a call. Thabo, a three-year-old male rhino, had taken a bullet. It was the poachers. How could the poachers break into the fence in broad daylight At that point, a rumor suggested it was an inside job. Maybe someone was trying to frighten her into leaving
Lawrence was gone. A rhino in trouble and security men she couldn’t rely on. Since booking after booking had been canceled due to Lawrence’s passing away, Fran oise finally had an empty bank account. But how could she leave the dream that Lawrence and she had fought so hard for
Fran oise slowly found her feet. Eventually Thabo recovered from the trauma. She set up meetings with the staff to go over reserve and animal issues and to agree on priorities. She even launched her own rhino fund. The desperate days have helped redefine the purpose of life without Lawrence, and she understands that the mission of protecting Thula Thula’s wildlife has become hers, and hers alone.
24. What do we know about Fran oise
A. She cooked local dishes specially for tourists.
B. She has lived in a foreign country for decades.
C. She met her husband on her trip to South Africa.
D. She has been crazy about animals since childhood.
25. What happened shortly after Lawrence’s death
A. The reserve was in financial trouble.
B. Her security men quit their jobs.
C A rumor that she would leave went viral.
D. One of the rhinos was illegally shot.
26. How has the experience of tackling tough situations affected Francoise
A. She has gained the strength to live bravely.
B. Her reserve has begun to bring in money.
C. Her management skills have been shared by others.
D. She has become expert in attending injured animals.
27. What is the best title of the text
A. Tips on Protecting Wild Animals
B. Rebirth from a Wounded Reserve
C. A Rhino Survived the Poachers Gunshot

Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel (柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2020.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety” — drivers’ concerns about running out of electricity on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed greatly over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their high prices drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade picky consumers. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine (内燃机) models a run for their money.
As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial (商业的) electric flight a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions (排放). If the US could replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim (声称) to be completely emission-free. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.
28. The underlined word “hurdle” in Paragraph 2 probably means __________.
A. aim B. difficulty C. result D. step
29. Why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars in the past
A. They were very poorly made. B. They were not widely promoted.
C. They were expensive. D. They couldn’t travel at a high speed.
30. What is the function of Paragraph 4
A. To introduce the history of electric travel.
B. To explain why the world needs more electric cars.
C. To show why more people have interest in electric cars.
D. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.
31. Which is the best title for this passage
A. Driving into a Cleaner Future B. History of Electric Cars
C Problems with Petrol and Diesel Cars D. Best Means of Transportation
D
In just a few decades the United States could eliminate fossil fuels and rely 100 percent on clean, renewable energy. That’s the vision of Mark Jacobson, a Stanford engineering professor who has produced a state-by-state road map of how the country could rid itself of coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear power.
By 2050, Jacobson expects the nation’s transportation network—cars, ships, airplanes—to run on batteries or hydrogen produced from electricity. He sees the winds blowing across the Great Plains powering vast stretches of the country’s middle while the burning sun helps electrify the Southwest. “There’s no state that can’t do this,” Jacobson says.
Today only 13% of U.S. electricity comes from renewables. Jacobson’s goal would be one of the nation’s most ambitious undertakings. This transformation would cost roughly $15 trillion or $47,000 for each American, for building and installing systems that produce and store renewable energy.
What would it take Seventy-eight million rooftop solar systems, nearly 49,000 commercial solar plants, 156,000 offshore wind turbines (风力涡轮机), plus wave-energy systems. Land-based wind farms would need 328,000 turbines, each with blades longer than a football field. These farms would occupy as much land as North Carolina.
For now, he says, prospects are encouraging. Thanks in part to government funding and large-scale production, costs are falling. The amount of power generated nationwide by wind and solar increased 15-fold each between 2003 and 2013. This summer the US President moved to reduce carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, and Hawaii committed to having all its electricity provided by renewables by 2045.
Still, many experts aren’t convinced. “It has zero chance,” Stephen Brick, an energy fellow with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, says of Jacobson’s plan. Political, regulatory, and social barriers are huge, especially in a nation where the energy systems—and much of its political influence—is rooted in the oil, gas, and coal industries. Some critics are concerned about whether the resulting grid (输电网) would be reliable. And neighborhood battles would likely occur over wind farms and solar plants. Even outspoken scientist James Hansen, who warned the government a quarter century ago about climate change, insists that nuclear power is essential to rid the country of fossil fuels.
Yet Jacobson’s work at least offers a starting point. Scientists and policymakers may keep arguing about solutions, but as President points out, the nation must continue its march toward a clean-energy future—even if it’s not yet clear how that will look in 35 years. “If we don’t do it,” he said this summer, “nobody will.”
32. Which of the following does Professor Mark Jacobson engage in
A. Organizing projects to build and install solar energy systems state by state.
B. Persuading the U.S. President to realize his renewable energy goal.
C. Outlining a plan detailing how energy in the U.S. could be carbon free by 2050.
D. Arguing about opportunities and obstacles of his plan.
33. Which of the following is the major obstacle to the transformation from fossil fuels to renewables
A. The huge investment in solar and wind projects. B. The solid foundation of traditional energy systems.
C The job losses in oil and coal industries. D. The inevitable land-use battles between states.
34. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. at least one state of the U.S. will not use fossil fuels to generate electricity by 2050
B. developing clean-energy industry will drive the world’s market
C. fossil fuels will soon be eliminated in the U.S.
D. there will be no vacant land for wind farms
35. What is the best title for the passage
A. The Coexistence of Fossil Fuels and Renewables
B. A Blueprint for a Carbon Free America
C. One Man’s Dream: Determination and Innovation in Energy Future
D. Professor and his Solar and Wind Technology

One day Officer Jackson and Steve were discussing a serious case when they were informed of a disturbance (骚乱) in the nearby subway. So, they walked out of the station and got into their car.
The two officers had expected they’d have to deal with an annoying beggar troubling the passers-by for money. But when they arrived at the crime scene, they were shocked at the beggar’s appearance. The man had tears in his eyes and was sitting on the subway stairs, looking untidy and tired.
“Excuse me, sir,” Officer Jackson said. “You can’t stay here, nor can you bother the people to give you money. You have to leave this place.”
“Look, officers,” the man sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble, okay I lost my cane (拐杖), and I can’t walk without it. I wanted a few cents so I could get myself something to eat.”
The two officers exchanged looks, knowing the man wasn’t a disturbance but someone who really needed their help. So they promised to get him food, buy him a cane, and drop him home.
After doing that, the officers drove to the beggar’s home, only to discover he had no home at all. He was just wandering in the streets and living off the leftovers he managed to find.
The poor man said his name was Eugene. When he was working at a skyscraper construction site, he was injured and became disabled, losing his ability to walk. Unfortunately, his disability forbade him from doing physical labor, and he wasn’t well-educated to find a desk job, so he remained jobless. Because he couldn’t provide for his family, his wife and children left him. “I don’t have any hopes of changing my destiny (命运), officers,” the man said.
But Officer Jackson wanted Eugene to change his life. “You’re still young,” he said.
“You can’t lose hope so soon. He brought him something warm to eat, helped him take a shower, and gave him his warm boots. After his work, Officer Jackson drove Eugene to a shelter for the homeless and left.

B She has lived in a foreign country for decades.

C

A. To introduce the history of electric travel.
B. To explain why the world needs more electric cars.
C. To show why more people have interest in electric cars.
D. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.

This transformation would cost roughly $15 trillion, or $47,000 for each American, for building and installing systems that produce and store renewable energy.
C. The job losses in oil and coal industries.

根据上文“Forgiving yourself entails experiencing feelings of self-condemnation. (原谅自我需要经历种种自责的感觉)”可知,空处应承接前文,继续讨论这些感觉,D项“这些(感觉)之后会被需要修复错误的感觉所取代。”选项中 “These”指代“feelings”,符合题意,故选D。
【37题详解】
结合上一句“It’s of vital importance to stop interpreting them as sources of shame and regret. (停止将过错解释为羞愧和遗憾的根源是重要的)”可知,下文应该提出正确的做法。E项“你需要把它们当作成为你自己的过程的一部分。”说明了正确的做法应该是将过错视为自我成长的一部分,且有相同代词“them”的复现。符合题意,故选E。
【38题详解】
根据下文“In order to forgive yourself, you must, first of all, recognize your mistakes in the situation that’s causing you to feel guilty. From there, you can clearly express your will to repair the damage and to empathize with those who’ve been affected by your actions. (为了原谅自己,首先,你必须认识到自己在导致你感到内疚的情况下所犯的错误。从那里,你可以清楚地表达你的意愿,修复损害,并同情那些已经受到你的行为影响的人)”可知,本段主要为要对自己的过错负责任,修复伤害并且对受影响的他者抱有同理心。因此,作为段落主旨句应该起概括作用。A项“自我宽恕超越了自怜的感觉。”说明要超越自怨自艾的小我情怀。符合题意,故选A。
【39题详解】
结合上文“The ability to forgive yourself also implies your firm belief that change is possible. (原谅自己的能力也意味着你坚信改变是可能的)”及下文“As a matter of fact, it simply means you’re aware of it. (事实上,这意味着你注意到了)”可知,空处的内容应该承接前文,且与下文意思相反。B项“这并不意味着忽略您所犯的错误。”符合题意,故选B。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Finally, the last dimension of self-forgiveness is the awareness that you’re only human, hence, not perfect. Consequently, you’re capable of failing at any point in your life. Recognizing yourself as part of humanity can also help you to be more compassionate towards others. (最后,自我宽恕的最后一个维度是意识到你只是人类,因此,不是完美的。因此,你在人生的任何时候都有可能失败。认识到自己是人性的一部分也可以帮助你对他人更有同情心)”可知,要意识到自己作为人的属性可以帮助你更加富有同情心,延续这个优点和好处,因而空处应该是对前文内容的总结。G项“这意味着当你在面对其他人的过错时,你会变得宽容和柔软。”总结上文,符合题意,故选G。

After doing that the officers drove to the beggar’s home, only to discover he had no home at all.

Eugene was shocked. “I just have to give you something, Eugene,” Officer Jackson said. He gave Eugene an envelope containing $12,000 inside. The two officers had started a campaign for Eugene and managed to raise that amount in three months. “You can slowly start a new life with this money, friend,” Officer Jackson said encouragingly. Eugene was deeply touched by their kindness.
A few months later, Eugene was a changed man. He got a job at the shelter and rented an apartment nearby. He was also continuing to seek help and meet a psychologist to heal the wounds his past had given him. Every day before going to work, he would clean up his appearance and face his colleagues and work in the best state. People at the shelter all loved the warm and positive man, all thanks to the two kind officers.
