Any 25th birthday is a cause for celebration. But it was even more so for Janus, a two-headed Greek tortoise (龟). Living in the Natural History Museum of Geneva, Switzerland, Janus is now believed to be the world’s oldest two-headed tortoise. The museum celebrated the special occasion with a day-long party filled with fun events, which included taking photos with the birthday “boy”.
In the wild, Greek tortoises can live up to two hundred years in their natural habitat. However, two-headed tortoises, like Janus, usually do not survive for that long. Unlike normal tortoises, they are unable to take back their two heads into their shell, making them highly easy to be attacked.
Janus, who has spent his entire life in the museum, faces no such danger. But life is not without challenges for the two-headed tortoise who also has two hearts and two pairs of lungs. Each head controls the front and back legs on its side of the body. The right head is more curious and more awake. The left head is more passive and loves to eat. This can lead to confusion when the two heads decide to go in different directions. To make matters worse, the two heads frequently rub against each other, resulting in skin sores (溃疡). Janus also has a hard time rolling back onto his feet when he accidentally turns over. If left on their backs for too long, tortoises can get sunburned, dehydrated (脱水的) and even die.
Fortunately, Janus has a special caregiver, Angelica Bourgoin, to make sure he lives a long and healthy life. The tortoise receives a daily massage and is bathed in green tea and flower water. He eats a special diet of organic fruits and vegetables, keeps active with walks, and rides on his skateboard. With such loving care, the two-headed tortoise will surely continue to break many more records for long life.
4. Why is it hard for two-headed tortoises to survive in the wild
A. They can’t avoid biting each other. B. They can’t find enough food to eat.
C. They can’t hide from their enemies. D. They can’t run as fast as normal ones.
5. Where was Janus born
A. In a pet store. B. In the museum.
C In the ocean. D. In Bourgoin’s home.
6. What will be Janus’s biggest threat if he’s left alone on his back
A. The death of thirst. B. Different decisions.
C. The pain on his skin. D. Two halves of body.
7. Which of the following can best describe Janus’s life
A. Terrible. B. Free. C. Easy. D. Boring.

Walking through an airport is never easy. Now imagine doing it if you were blind. That's the problem faced by Chieko Asakawa, a computer scientist and IBM researcher. Asakawa often flies between the US and Japan, making the journey monthly. If traveling alone she has to be helped at both ends of the flight, which sometimes includes endless waiting. Searching for a better replacement led Asakawa to invent a high-tech suitcase that helps get her to the place she wants to go safely.
“I never relax when I travel alone,” she says. “I always think about what technology will help me travel easier, quicker and more comfortably.” It was this restlessness that led to the AI suitcase.
The idea has been in development since 2017 through research between IBM, other Japanese companies, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Asakawa says there are hopes to commercialize the suitcase and a pilot scheme(试验计划)is planned to use it in an airport,a shopping mall and other public spaces. Though the suitcase is too full of tech to hold any clothes, that could change in the future, she says.
A runner, Asakawa held Olympic dreams as a child, but a swimming accident at age 11 caused her to gradually lose her sight until, aged 14, she became totally blind. As a grown-up she has paid attention to developing accessibility technology. Among her creations is “a Designer,” whose aim is to make designers' websites more user-friendly, and “IBM Home Page Reader”, the first voice browser(浏览器)to allow Internet access for blind people. Asakawa has won industry and government awards and been introduced into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame.
“The blind people usually use a white cane (手杖)or a guide dog. It will open up many doors for blind people, because we'd be able to go anywhere by ourselves. Without new technology, we cannot make our society more inclusive,” Asakawa says. “A smart suitcase is a great showcase for how AI and technology can change the lives of the blind.”
8. What drove Asakawa to invent the suitcase
A. The suggestion from an international airport.
B. The wish to finish her trip without any help.
C. The huge business advantages of the suitcase.
D. The experience of keeping the blind company
9. What can we say about the suitcase
A. It can hold clothes.
B. It has yet to be widely used.
C. It has proved unhelpful for the blind.
D. It is ready to be commercially produced.
10. What does Asakawa think of the suitcase
A. It will encourage more scientists to help the blind.
B. It will make the public care for the blind more.
C. It will hugely free up the blind's movements.
D. It will change people's way of traveling.
11. What is the best title for this text
A. Technology is changing people's lives rapidly.
B. A robot suitcase makes traveling easy and popular.
C. Traveling alone requires much courage for the blind.
D. A smart suitcase could replace canes and guide dogs for the blind.

Parents annoyed by their little ones’ picky food choices often sigh in anger, thinking, “They’ll grow out of it by college.” Maybe not, suggests a new study from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Some young people continue their picky eating into early adulthood, often restricting their diets to 10 food s or even fewer. Such a deficient diet can mean they’re not getting the fibre (纤维) and vegetables they need, which could be a health problem. The study also suggests picky eaters may also be experiencing other challenges such as social phobias (恐惧症), including around eating. The social phobia is the fear of being judged by others during everyday activities, often resulting in fear or embarrassment.
For the study, researchers surveyed 488 Midwestern college students. About 40% of the students were identified as picky eaters. And about 65% of those respondents said they ate fewer than 10 foods. “We asked participants to just tell us what challenges around picky eating might have had or any benefits they might see, and people answered differently in terms of what has an effect on them,” said co-author Lauren Dial, a doctoral student at Bowling Green State at the time of the study.
Many indicated they’d eat less or not at all outside the home. One 19-year-old man said he’d drink water half the time “due to my picky eating”, according to the study. Another 18-year-old said, “Sometimes there are some awkward comments when I am eating with my girlfriend and her family.” A 23-year-old woman said her parents would get frustrated at her refusal to try the foods she was served.
“Picky eating does have a lot to do with the presentation of foods (how they’re presented on a plate), and the texture (口感) of foods,” Dial said, “but there’s also fear of trying new foods and that might play into picky eating.” By learning more about picky eating in adults, the researchers said they may be able to determine how best to intervene (干预) before the problem becomes more severe for some people.
12. What can best replace the underlined word “deficient” in paragraph 1
A. High-fibre. B. Low-fat. C. Balanced. D. Limited.
13. What were the participants asked to do during the research
A. Record how often they eat out.
B. Ignore what influences their eating.
C. Express how picky eating affects them.
D. Count how many kinds of foods they prefer.
14 How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3
A. By presenting data. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following time order. D. By providing examples.
15. What can be inferred about picky eating in the last paragraph
A. It has something to do with family traditions.
B. It can be easily cured by the researchers.
C. It can have both physical and mental reasons.
D. It often comes along with serious mental illnesses.

You know how when big things in your life aren’t going well and the little things bother you more That happened to me last year. Like many people during the pandemic, my husband, Paul, was laid off. I was still working, but my job was only part-time and would likely be ending soon too. I was worried about money, pandemic and our future.
That’s when our mailboxes really started getting to me. I’d never liked our mailboxes much. They stood at the end of our long driveway, far enough away from our house. Fortunately, I didn’t see them often. The mailboxes had already been in rough shape when we moved in and the paint was faded.
At some point, someone had driven into the pole. It was now bent slightly, making the mailboxes bend, pointing in different directions. Still, because the boxes could hold the mail and the mail carrier wasn’t complaining, there really was no need to replace them.
“I wish we could have better mailboxes,” I found myself thinking as I pulled out of the driveway one day on my way to work. It was just a passing thought. I probably would have forgotten all about it if not for the news we got the next morning.
The next day, my neighbor Ailsa told me a girl drove her car right into the mailboxes and completely knocked them down. Ailsa saw the accident and gave her our number and information. “That certainly wasn’t in our budget,” I thought. Though I wanted new mailboxes, getting them would be expensive. With our income decreasing since Paul’s layoff, this was an expense we didn’t need. I sighed.
However, the next day where our old, rusted mailboxes had once stood were two new shiny mailboxes-one black, one white. Each one had large, neat numbers on the sides, the white mailbox with black numbers and the black one with white numbers. They were beautiful. I sat there, feeling surprised.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

C. In the ocean. D. In Bourgoin’s home.
6. What will be Janus’s biggest threat if he’s left alone on his back
A. The death of thirst. B. Different decisions.
C. The pain on his skin. D. Two halves of body.
7. Which of the following can best describe Janus’s life
A. Terrible. B. Free. C. Easy. D. Boring.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. C

14. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项关于大学生的研究表明,那些挑食的人不仅会面临健康的问题,往往还经历着社交恐惧症等挑战。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上一句“Some young people continue their picky eating into early adulthood, often restricting their diets to 10 food s or even fewer. (一些年轻人在成年早期仍然挑食,经常将他们的饮食限制在10种甚至更少的食物。)”可知,这样一种饮食指的是上文提到的一些年轻人挑食,其饮食的种类非常有限。由此推知,deficient意思是“有限的”,与limited意思相近。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“We asked participants to just tell us what challenges around picky eating might have had or any benefits they might see (我们要求参与者告诉我们挑食可能带来的挑战或他们可能看到的好处)”可知,该研究中参与者需要表达挑食是如何影响他们的。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“One 19-year-old man said he’d drink water half the time “due to my picky eating”, according to the study. Another 18-year-old said, “Sometimes there are some awkward comments when I am eating with my girlfriend and her family.” A 23-year-old woman said her parents would get frustrated at her refusal to try the foods she was served. (研究显示,一名19岁的男子表示,“因为挑食”,他有一半的时间都在喝水。另一位18岁的网友说:“有时候,当我和女朋友及其家人一起吃饭时,会听到一些尴尬的评论。”一名23岁的女子说,她的父母会因为她拒绝尝试提供给她的食物而感到沮丧。)”可知,在本段中作者主要介绍了三个挑食的年轻人的具体事例,因此主要是通过举例来展开段落的。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““Picky eating does have a lot to do with the presentation of foods (how they’re presented on a plate), and the texture (口感) of foods,” Dial said, “but there’s also fear of trying new foods and that might play into picky eating.” (“挑食确实与食物的摆盘(它们在盘子上的呈现方式)和食物的质地有很大关系,”Dial说,“但也有对尝试新食物的恐惧,这可能会导致挑食。”)”可知,食物的摆盘和质地、对尝试新食物的恐惧都有可能导致挑食。由此可知,挑食既有外在的原因又有心理上的原因。故选C项。

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

【答案】One possible version:
I opened one of the mailboxes and found a note. “Dear owner,” it read, “I am so sorry that I hit your mailboxes. I bought new pretty ones and replaced them. Again, I am so sorry. Have a wonderful day!” The writer, Audree, had bought two new mailboxes for us and she had left her phone number and address in case we needed anything else. We did - we needed to thank her. We also wanted to make sure that she hadn’t been injured.
When we called, the girl’s mother answered. “Audree is 19 years old. She’s only been driving for a year. She was not hurt. This was a great learning experience for Audree,” her mother said. From her mother, I learned that Audree had a part-time job and with the money she earned from the job, she bought the mailboxes. The young girl makes me believe that though life rarely goes as planned, it will surprise us if we are brave enough. So don’t give up the effort to maintain our hope and optimism.
