I arrived home from work, my mind racing. I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a pricey piece of equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of my agenda, and I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest Harry Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through the reference books related to my disciplines for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind couldn’t handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.
To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.
What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical fictional stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries, as well as struggles people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the scientific community and could serve it, heart and soul.
What did the author do to wipe out the anxiety?
A. He drowned it in chocolate. B. He conducted an experiment.
C. He slept on the sofa leisurely. D. He escaped into a fantasy world.
What does the author mean by the underlined part in paragraph 2? A Reading novels was a waste of time.
Reading a good book was time well spent.
He was too busy to take good care of his books.
The Harry Potter book wasn’t as good as expected.
How did the New Year ’s resolution benefit the author?
More sympathy went out to him.
His moral values were strengthened.
He learned much about religious diversity.
He gained new insight into his academic discipline.
What’s the best title of the text?
A. Reading: A Lifelong Hobby B. The Power of Research Papers
C. Novels: Love at Second Sight D. The Benefits of History Reading
C
Carlos Slim’s proposal that we work a three-day week sounds crazy. But many, in 1922, thought Henry Ford crazy when he announced that his staff would work a five-day week.
Our working week seems normal to us because it is what we all always do. He certainly could be for those he was most concerned about when he made his three-day-week statement at a business conference in Paraguay: the workers who are not ready to retire. As Mr. Slim said, it no longer makes sense for people to stop working in their fifties or sixties when they may still have up to a third of their lives ahead of them. “People are going to have to work for more years, until they are 70 or 75, and just work three days a week—perhaps 11 hours a day.” he said.
Keeping older employees at work makes sense for societies, especially those with a diminishing number of
young people who are expected to support long - living retirees.
He appeared to be suggesting that these short-week workers earn the same as they did full-time. That is what happens at Telmex, his Mexican fixed-line phone company, where those qualified for retirement can choose to work four-day weeks on full pay.
Older workers elsewhere might prefer shorter weeks on reduced pay, and eight or nine-hour days rather than
11. Their companies might value keeping their experience while saving money on their salaries. What about everyone else? There are those who are unemployed, or in unstable jobs, who would be delighted to have three secure, well-paid days of work a week.
Shorter weeks don’t work in every job, but they work in more jobs than most tradition-bound managers think. Agreeing to them requires two shifts in management thinking. The first is the realization that much of the time spent in offices is wasted anyway. Second, senior executives need to understand that the best way to measure people is by the work they produce—not by how much time they spend at their desks.
People living longer, in better health, are changing working life too. Mr. Slim’s idea is in tune with the times.
According to paragraph 2, why did Mr. Slim think it unwise for people in their fifties or sixties to retire?
Because they have longer life to live in their future.
Because they have children and old parents to support
Because they have much interest in their present work.
Because they have more experience than young workers.
What can we infer from the passage?
The decision of working five days a week by Ford was considered normal in the past.
Old people continuing working can reduce young people’s pressure to support their old parents
Some companies don’t want their old workers to go on working because they can save money.
Much time spent at work is wasted if managers don’t agree to reduce old employees’ working time.
What does the underlined phrase “in tune with” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Different from. B. Superior to.
C. Far from. D. Consistent with.
What is the best title for this passage?
Retire Or Not, This Is A Question!
Shorter Weeks Is Welcome By All
Working Three Days A Week: A Great Idea

Dreams, according to Carl Jung, reveal a certain amount of reality hidden during waking consciousness. In Jungian philosophy, the conflict and chaos experienced in dreams finally bring order to our lives. While Jung’s mystical theories are debatable, he was not mistaken about the importance of dreaming. A growing number of reports show that a continuous lack of dreaming is damaging our waking hours in many ways.
This trend is causing damage to our immune and metabolic (新陈代谢的) systems, let alone the electronic products that keep us up late at night are ruining our sleep patterns, which has long-term consequences on our memory system. One study showed that not allowing mice to have adequate amounts of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the stage in which we dream, the mice couldn’t strengthen memories.
You might think this is just a sleep problem, but dreaming is inseparable from our nighttime rest. We sleep in cycles (周期), each lasting about 90 minutes; in a sleep cycle, we go through non-REM sleep before hitting REM. As the night progresses, REM sleep periods increase in length while deep sleep (one of the stages of non-REM sleep) decreases. The longer we sleep, the more time we spend in REM, which is why we are often dreaming when waking up in the morning. If we sleep less than seven hours, however, it becomes harder to achieve this level of REM.
The combination of sleeping and dreaming acts as an emotional stabilizer. We recover from emotional hurt faster when we sleep and dream properly. However, we’re not getting enough sleep to cycle through the stages to take advantage of this natural circadian (昼夜节奏的) anti-depressant (抗抑郁剂)—dreams. Instead, we get depressed and turn to alcohol or medicines to get to sleep, which only makes things worse because even one drink leads to late REM while anti-depressants promote deep sleep at the expense of REM.
We’re paying for this lack of dreaming in many ways. For example, a 2021 study stated that compared with quiet rest and non-REM sleep, REM promoted the formation of associative networks and the integration of unassociated information. Volunteers that experienced more REM sleep were better equipped for solving problems requiring creative solutions.
Rowan Hooper, the managing editor at New Scientist, writes that dreams that include an “emotional core” appear to be a main function of REM sleep and that we should look at sleep patterns as seriously as we do diet and exercise habits.
What’s Carl Jung’s view about dreams?
A. They cause chaos. B. They damage immunity.
C. They reveal secrets. D. They mirror reality.
Why is the sleep process explained in paragraph 3?
To show a dream mainly occurs during REM sleep.
To prove the minimum sleep time should be seven hours.
To prove dream problems and sleep problems are attached.
To show people often dream when waking up in the morning.
What conclusion can be inferred from paragraph 5?
Dreaming promotes creativity.
Dreaming helps fight depression.
The brain still receives new information during REM sleep.
The brain is paying the price for having more non-REM sleep.
What’s the main idea of the passage?
The importance of sleep lies in dreams.
The absence of dreams is terrible for us.
Dreaming patterns are more important than we realize.
Dreaming has mystical power of strengthening memories.

Travelling with some of your favourite people is an exciting experience. If done well, group travelling can be the most thrilling experience ever, filled with games, laughter, and unforgettable memories. 36 Read on for some of the things you need to note and do for an enjoyable experience.
37
Ideas are usually exciting when they are fresh. The longer you delay, the more you’ll find excuses not to go. Let all interested parties meet as soon as possible to decide on dates, locations and budget. It’s best to plan the trip three or four months in advance.
Assign roles
For the trip to be successful, it has to be well organized. You’re going on a trip far from home, not the shopping mall. This is why the group should assign a leader who would be responsible for planning and organizing the trip. 38 Break them down further. For example, choose someone to handle booking a hotel and another person to take care of the meal.
Budget pool
39 You can do a weekly or monthly payment plan before your trip. Once you decide how much would fund the trip, members can start contributing the money weekly or monthly. The leader would then use the money to pay for accommodations, meals, transportation and more while you’re on vacation. If there’s money left in the end, split it up or go wild one last night.
Create a flexible itinerary(行程)
An easy way to create and share an itinerary is through Google Docs. Add the group members to the document and give them permission to edit it. Suggest one or two optional activities per day which do not require advance bookings, such as a local hike or museum. 40
Start early.
Get fresh ideas.
So how do you plan for your group trip?
Collect a set amount from everyone before your trip.
Don’t forget to create room for something unexpected.
Also, divide the other responsibilities as they arise so that everyone participates.
The group leader generally keeps in contact with everyone, handling most of the detailed work.

Paula is a 55-year-old woman living in New Jersey. She lives a happy life without concern for financial or social problems and she constantly shares laughs with her family and friends. About ten years ago, her husband Michael gave her a gold ring with a diamond in it on their 20th wedding anniversary. She cherished it very much and wore it every day.
Having been married for almost 30 years, Paula had everything set for herself, and knew that her life in New Jersey was a thrilling one. One day, Paula was in the bathroom cleaning everything up, from the sink to the floor. She wanted to keep her house clean and beautiful. As soon as Paula finished washing the bathtub, she moved on to the part she feared most: the toilet. Wanting to get it out of the way, she quickly cleaned the inside of the toilet with a brush, and flushed ( 冲 走 ) the soap away. After finishing, she felt there was something wrong, but she couldn’t think of what it was.
Paula’s heart skipped a beat when she noticed that her left ring finger felt a bit lighter. She slowly looked down at her ring finger, hoping that her treasured anniversary gift was still on it. She was frightened to see that it was lost. She didn’t notice that she flushed it down the toilet.
Paula said, “I must have flushed it down. It had been a little big on my finger, because it was winter time and my hands were smaller. I felt so bad about it, sad and embarrassed.”
She couldn’t believe that she just let thousands of dollars go down the drain (下水道) literally. She searched the bathroom and even the house, hoping that she just dropped it somewhere and forgot about it. She even took apart the toilet and searched the inside pipes with a flashlight, but in vain. Paula had no idea how to explain this to her husband. To buy the ring, Michael worked extra hard before the anniversary, so to tell him the bad news was unimaginable for Paula.
注意:
续写词数应为150左右;
请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She softly knocked on the door to their bedroom.
After finishing her explanation, Paula wiped away her tears and waited for Michael to say something.
