17. It was a great gift to the world from ancient China. Before it was invented, sailors had to depend on the stars to find direction. After it was invented, the oceans were open to travel. And many new discoveries were made with the help of it.
It was one of the greatest inventions. It is said that in the 3rd century a Chinese man wrote about how to make it. At first, it was used for making fireworks. At the end of the Tang dynasty, people began to use it in wars. The method of making it was brought to the Arab world and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.
China was the first country in the world to make paper. During the Western Han dynasty(202 B. C.—A. D. 9), paper was made in some places in China. It was developed in the Eastern Han dynasty(A. D. 25—A. D. 220) by Cai Lun. He made paper with bark, ropes, rags and so on. Before it was invented, the ancient Chinese carved characters on animal bones and stones. They also wrote them on bamboo and wooden sticks.
It was developed in 1041—1048 in the Song dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved characters on pieces of clay and wood. Then he put ink on them. You don't have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One Dutch designer is finding creative ways to make a change—and he's inviting bikers to join him.
Daan Roosgaarde, 38, is a designer from Holland. He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog (雾霾) Free Project, he designed a special tower that cleans air in Chinese parks. In Holland, he designed a shining bicycle path.
Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at Chinese bike-sharing company Ofo to create a new product for public use. It's an air-cleaning machine connected to a bicycle and is part of the Smog Free Project. In smoggy weather, the machine would breathe in the air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air toward the biker's face.
It's no secret that air pollution is a big problem for China. In winter, it's common for thick clouds of haze (霾), caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions (排放物), to cover areas of China.
In 2016, only one-fourth of Chinese cities met the country's air quality standards, according to a survey of 338 cities nationwide from the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
"Of course one tower and a few bikes won't solve China's air pollution problem,'' Daan said. "But smog-free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully inspire communities to create greener cities."

What was discovered by accident The answer is penicillin(青霉素). It kills germs. By killing germs, it saves lives. Suppose you are sick. You go to a doctor. She examines you. She says you have a "staph" infection(葡萄球菌感染). She gives you some medicine. You take it. The medicine knocks out the staph. Soon you are well. Before penicillin, this would not happen. Staph was almost sure death.
Everyone wanted a medicine. Laboratories worked day and night. They grew the staph in small dishes. Then they tried to kill it. Nothing worked.
The laboratory dishes had covers on them. They kept things from falling into dishes. Moulds(霉菌) were a big worry. They are always in the air. You can't see them. They're too small. There are thousands of different moulds. Moulds can make an experiment(实验) fail. That's why dishes are covered.
Dr Alexander Fleming was working to kill the staph germs. He worked for years. One clay he took a cover off a dish. He looked inside. There was a thick growth of staph germs. There were also some moulds. Then he saw something strange. Where the moulds were, there was no growth of staph. This is what Fleming probably thought. "By accident, I found a mould to kill the dreaded staph."
This is how penicillin was found. But here's the real miracle(奇迹). There are thousands of kinds of moulds. But only one kind can kill staph. The mould must have fallen into the dish a few days before. The cover was probably off only a few seconds(秒). In those few seconds the right mould fell into the right dish. Another man might have thrown the dish away. But Fleming was very careful and smart. He understood what the mould did. How lucky the humans were!

1.答案:A
It's+形容词+ for sb. to do sth." 故选A。
compare...to...
收起; go over复习; look through浏览; give out分发。
4.答案:A
根据语境可知,应用 allow sb. to do sth. 被动语态形式sb. be allowed to do sth."
在句式"It's +形容词+of/for sb. to do sth."
9.答案:B
解析:点拨:根据后句It will land…
look into调查; look through浏览; look down向下看; look after照顾。

14.答案:A
故选A项。
