Days after Argentina canceled all international passenger flights to protect the country from the new coronavirus, Juan Manuel Ballestero began his journey home the only way possible: He stepped aboard his small sailboat for what turned out to be an 85-day odyssey(艰险旅行) across the Atlantic.
The 47-year-old sailor could have stayed put on the tiny Portuguese island of Porto Santo, but the idea of spending what he thought could be “the end of the world” away from his family, especially his father who was soon to turn 90, was unbearable. So he loaded his 29-foot sailboat with canned fish, fruit and rice and set sail in mid-March.
“I didn’t want to stay like a coward(懦夫) on an island where there were no cases,” Mr. Ballestero said. “I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family.”
Friends tried to dissuade Mr. Ballestero from starting the perilous journey, and the authorities in Portugal warned him he might not be allowed to re-enter if he ran into trouble and had to turn back. But he was determined, “I bought myself a one-way ticket and there was no going back,” he said.
Sailing can be a lonely passion, and it was particularly so on this voyage for Mr. Ballestero, who each night tuned into the news on a radio for 30 minutes to assess how the virus was spreading across the globe. “I kept thinking about whether this would be my last trip,” he said.
When he made it to his native Mar del Plata, on June 17, he was surprised by the hero’s welcome he received. “Entering my port where my father had his sailboat, where he taught me so many things about how to sail, gave me the taste of a mission accomplished,” he said. A medical professional administered a test for Covid-19 on the dock. Within 72 hours, after the test came back negative, he was allowed to set foot on Argentine soil.

On Saturday night, a five-person team of the Chinese e-sports club, with the full name EDward Gaming, won the 2021 League of Legends World Championship in Reykjavik , Iceland , beating defending champion Damwon KIA (DK) from South Korea. The live streaming of the championship had over 200 million viewers on two major domestic smartphone apps and other channels.
The team has taken the opportunity to share Chinese culture with the world. At the beginning of the championship, the members of EDG and other staff displayed tai chi, martial arts and traditional Chinese costumes in Reykjavik, launching a “Chinese hurricane” in the Icelandic capital. Now the posting of photos and videos on social networks have spread that hurricane to the whole world.
With the popularity of digital technology, new forms of cultural exchanges have been appearing, of which e-sports are of the hottest. Unlike texts and videos, e-sports go beyond the barriers of language and are understandable around the world.
Also e-sports appeal most to those in their early 20s, as shown by the carnival of college students on Saturday night. That in turn makes them a good bridge of communication between Chinese youngsters and their counterparts (同行) around the world. More importantly, the e-sports industry is sustainable (可持续的) in spreading Chinese culture, as the large audiences mean huge commercial potential. In 2020 alone, the sales profit of the domestic e-sports industry went beyond $ 43.56 billion, and involved 280,000 companies, which in turn created over 10 million jobs.
As early as 2019, Hainan province announced its ambitious plan of building an international e-sports center. On Nov 5, the Organizing Committee of the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou city, announced it had listed eight e-sports as events in the Games. Both show the strong policy support being given to e-sports.
With more Chinese star gaming clubs and teams appearing, the industry is expected to boom and continue spreading Chinese culture to the world.
28.What can we know from the news report
A.E-sports play a significant role in bridging cultures between nations.
B.The number of the viewers around the world reached over 200 million.
C.There was a severe hurricane in Reykjavik, Iceland on Saturday night.
D.EDward Gaming has won the LoL World Championship twice on end.
29.What do the numbers in Paragraph 4 indicate

B.2020 witnessed a turning point of e-sports.
C.E-sports gave birth to many new companies.
D.E-sports boosted(促进) economic development.
30.What can we infer from paragraph 5
A.The first international E-sports centre was built in 2019.
B.E-sports enjoyed great popularity in Hainan and Zhejiang.
C.E-sports received official support from the authorities.
D.E-sports were first listed as events in the Asian Games.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards the e-sports industry
A.Doubtful. B.Critical. C.Positive. D.Cautious.

This year, new technologies will enable more drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel(方向盘)while on the road. But that doesn’t mean their cars will be fully self-driving-that day still remains far in the future.
Automakers like General Motors (GM), Ford and Stellates are introducing, or upgrading existing technologies. But in the words of Kay Stepper, an automated driving expert, these systems are “feet off' and “hands off”, but they will not be“eyes off' or “mind off'.
For the time being, these systems will only be used on limited-access highways, where there are no pedestrians(行人)or bicyclists. Vehicles with this technology will be able to drive at relatively high speeds, but only in simple traffic situations.
Bryan Reimer, a researcher with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Age Lab, said it will be decades before people can buy truly self-driving cars in which humans ride as passengers.
Still, the technology that will be rolled out by the major automakers this year will do more than most so-called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS, do now.
GM's Super Cruise system allows drivers to completely let go off the steering wheel while driving on selected highways. It was introduced in 2017 on the Cadillac CT6 sedan, which was discontinued last year. An improved version is coming this year on the Cadillac Escalade SUV and the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans.
Super Cruise only works on highways that have been previously laser-mapped in three dimensions. GPS positioning and the vehicles' radar sensors and cameras are used to enable drivers to unhand all the controls.
Drivers still need to pay attention, however. A camera in the car makes sure the driver is looking at the road at all times. If the driver looks away from the road for more than a few seconds, the system will stop working.
32. At present, what can the self-driving cars do
A. They can drive freely on city streets.
B. They can run without human drivers.
C. They handle complex(复杂的)road conditions on their own.
D. They allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel.
33. What can we infer from the words of Kay Stepper
A. People need to trust new technology.
B. Super Cruise Does More than Most ADAS.
C. People can look away from the road.
D. People can't unhand all the controls.
34. What does Paragraph 6 mainly talk about
A. GM's latest car models. B. GM's Super Cruise system.
C. GM's development plan. D. GM's close competitors.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. It's High Time to Get a New Car.
B. The Industrial Revolution Is Underway.
C. The Real Self-driving Remains Far.
D. People still need to pay attention.
