A trip to the library was like a great journey to a different country. To get there, we had to walk a mile. But our weekly journeys to the library were a piece of perfection. I had around me at one time all the people I loved best — my father and mother and brothers and sister — and all the things I loved best — quiet, space and books.
I read a lot of books about science: not the spaceships my brothers preferred, but the birds and the bees — literally. I brought home a book of birds and searched the trees for anything other than robins. I went through a phrase of loving books with practical science experiments and used up a whole bottle of white vinegar(白醋) by pouring it on the sides of our apartment building to prove that it was constructed of limestone (石灰石).
One Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section, I saw a title: Little Women, by Lousia May Alcott. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs.
I read and read and read Little Women until it was time to walk home, and, except for sleeping and eating, I did not put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in the wake of Alcott’s story. It was about girls, for one thing, girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo. I had found someone who thought and felt the way I did.

Mrs Hagen had asked that every student entered the science this year. Kyle and Seth were divided into a group, much to Kyle's upset. Every- one knew that Seth was the laziest kid in the class. He never finished his homework, and he was always talking rather than listening in class. The boys decided to meet at Kyle's house after school to plan their project.
Seth arrived with a backpack that was filled with test tubes, magnets(磁铁) , and other needed materials. Kyle was surprised. Why would this lazy kid have such cool things At first, when Kyle suggested building a model of the solar system(太阳系),Seth told all kinds of facts about each model planet quickly. Maybe Kyle had mistaken Seth.
But finally, the boys agreed to experiment to find the best place to store bananas. The boys met each day after school and believed that their project would be the best. Kyle worked on writing the report, while Seth continued to question and study further. They found they made a quite strong team.
Ms. Hagen told Kvle that she was proud of him for helping Seth with the project. Kyle had to explain that Seth was responsible for much of the work. He went on to ask if Seth could be his partner for next month's math project.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined.
Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.
Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it influences all.
Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the whole forest.
“We didn’t take any notice of it,” Simard says sadly. “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
42.The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 3 probably means that trees ________.
A.depend on each other B.protect their own wealth
C.compete for survival D.provide support for dying trees
43.“Mother trees” are very important because they________.
A.know more about the complex “tree societies” B.seem more likely to be cut down by humans
C.look the largest in size in the forest D.pass on nutrition to young trees
44.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A.how young trees survive B.how “tree societies” work
C.how forestry industry develops D.how trees grow old
45.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Old Trees Communicate Like Humans B.Young Trees Are in Need of Protection
C.Trees Are More Fantastic Than You Think D.Trees Contribute to Our Society
